Critics Consensus

Jane Got a Gun flounders between campy Western and hard-hitting revisionist take on the genre, leaving Natalie Portman's committed performance stranded in the dust.

What is here is enjoyable if taken on its own terms, much of Jane Got a Gun playing out with a 1940s or '50s Hollywood lan I found more than satisfying. Go to Full Review

Rob A Jul 25 A perfectly serviceable, if ultimately forgettably, western - even if they did only make it so we could all get a gander at Natalie Portman in a cowboy hat ;) See more Kevin K Apr 23 I love Westerns, particularly Eastwood's "the moral of the story is..." Westerns, and despite the *mostly* pathetic pedantically-inclined hypercritical reviewers' self-indulgent & seemingly "lonely me wanna be a member of the gang/herd mentality" copycat negativistic judgements about Jane Got A Gun, in my view that Western rates right up on top with the likes of Old Henry, 3:10 To Yuma, Stagecoach (the original *&* the latest all-star redux), & et al. Ignore the lonely whining sheep talking smack like they're smart n wise er something ... Give it a watch. Good Western, plausible social & etc portrayed characters' relations, & a plausible & satisfying ending. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 💯 See more Danae B 06/22/2024 I loved this movie. Definitely one of Natalie Portman's best movies. I was surprised by the twist and turns of the plot. A little slow in the beginning but not so much so. See more Melanie P 03/02/2024 Movies about Southen Unionists killing Confederates is deplorable. Ewan as Bishop was excellent as murderer. Ham was an excellent patsy. Not a good plot and most dint have such a syrupy happy ending. See more Jean-Michel C 01/25/2024 "Natalie Got a Gun" should've been the title, given the impressive number of bullets N.P. either took or dodged, I'd say more of the latter in the end. Good job, excellent job anyway, the horse she chose to saddle and ride proved to be quite a wild one, but I have to admit that she made it to the final destination in the most beautiful way. O'Connor did a perfect job, acting is impeccable, really impeccable, filming is exactly what we expect from a western, the plot is a solid one. I personally loved it, kept me glued to the screen up to the very end, It deserves a full five star, it is a strong performance. I tip my hat to the Lady. Now, with all due respect to Mr McGregor who's pitch perfect as the lead villain, genuinely vicious, I'd be however interested to see how the film would've fared with Mr Cooper. Not Gary of course, but his spiritual son. See more 12/17/2020 JANE'S GOT A GUN is a surprise western with a great performance and a classic outlaw tale. See more Read all reviews
