Audience Member This is an odd one. Have people who normally make Godzilla movies do a film version of one of those 'are you going to hell?' comic flyers they used to distrubute, while telling the story of the Aum Shinri cult and throwing in random topless women, and you have this movie. The effects seemed to get more comedic the gorier they were supposed to be, they were so bad. Good for a laugh. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member (***): Thumbs Up A very strange film that has late night "cult classic" written all over it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member "Japanese Hell" is an odd mixture of eastern and western mythololgies about hell and eternal punishment. Given its technical limitations--i.e. everything is a practical effect--some of the sequences are so absurd looking as to be funny. The slow motion sequences are not actually shot in slow motion; rather, the actors move in slow motion. In its simplest form, this is the story of a young woman named Rika who is brought to hell by Ms. Enma. Rika has been a member of a suicide cult and Ms. Enma, the Queen of Hell, wants her to see what punishments await those who sin in this life. The torture sequences are gory in a Grand Guignol kind of way. Fake blood and fake body parts abound, as does wholly gratuitous female toplessness (in fact, the film ends with several females rejecting the cult's values and demonstrating their spiritual rebirth by stripping naked and begining to pray). It's worth seeing for some of the hell sequences, but it's mostly forgettable. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Odd little movie that consists of 3 vignettes and are connected with visceral depections of - Japanese Hell. Those scenes are done kind of 70's campy-like with a lot of makeup and even the occasional dragon thats a hand puppet. The goriness is so fake it doesn't really register, sorry - I'm immune. What doesnt work is that the movie goes into slow motion with these vignettes, especially the sarin gas cult one. While interesting it just impedes too much with the rest of the movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member unique cartoon for adults or want some voodoo dolls Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member the plot was a little muddled. the opening credits had a lot of shots of dancing, almost-naked women; but there wasn't any nudity in the movie, and only one scene in a dance club. not that i'm complaining, i'm just saying that they set a mood in the beginning that they didn't follow through with. i loved the way that hell looked though, very 60s, almost cheesy, primary color lighting effects. it's a neat movie and fun to watch, but on the whole it wasn't very good.
