What to Know

Critics Consensus

Jenny Slate leans into her Stage Fright in a special that's raw, honest, and as overwhelmingly delightful as the comedian herself.

These moments of tenderness are a reminder that even amidst the chaos of today, there is joy, and thus power, in the ones you love, in your moments of faith or embarrassment, in your community, in your sexuality. Go to Full Review

Jenny Slate: Stage Fright is funny, fearless, and phenomenal. It's a must-see that may make you feel seen. And if not, may still make you cackle like its charismatic comedian. Don't miss it. Go to Full Review

I can think of no better way to describe Stage Fright than as a secret, gentle, creamy treat for those who love and think deeply about clothing. Go to Full Review

Stage Fright calls on us to treat ourselves with respect, even when it feels like our world (personal, political, environmental) is crashing down. Go to Full Review

Jenny Slate is candid, genuine and endearing in her first stand-up special for Netflix. The standard special is elevated by home videos and documentary style vignettes. Go to Full Review

Jim J 03/04/2024 I did not find her funny at being more of laughing at her own jokes then the audience. Being more of courtesy to her show. The Marvelous Misses Massell now she was funny as Jenny no where compares to her. See more Frank U 01/24/2024 Loved Jenny Slate in the movie Gifted and I really admire ‘outside the box' comedy specials, but this one was neither funny nor clever nor innovative; primarily boring and, seemingly produced with little effort. See more tom m 10/05/2021 It was okay … entertaining enough. I think I like her acting better than her stand-up, though. See more 07/04/2021 Jenny Slate invites you to rethink what a stand-up routine can be, and I for one am grateful for that. There was nothing stale, predictable, or disappointing about this stand-up documentary. Genuine, hilarious, and unconventional - it does not try to cater to the audience most comedy caters to. I have no doubt that many audience members will dislike Stage Fright for its vulnerability or femininity and, not unlike much of the world, will fail to realize that these are truly its strengths. See more 03/06/2020 I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected I would. Like many, I love Jenny Slate on Parks and Rec. Don't know much about her outside of that and never seen her do stand-up. She has a very unique style that's completely her. Liked how she meshed half of it into a auto-mentary and the other half into her stand-up routine. It was nice how honest this seemed. Recommend it. See more 01/09/2020 While not for everyone, Stage Fright is a treat to those who are a fan of Jenny Slate. It may not be stand-up in its most standard form (it jumps between her stand-up act and interviews/conversations with both Jenny and her friends & family) but it's a joy to watch nonetheless; Slate gives a genuine look at her life, upbringing, personality, and beliefs in this candid special. While some viewers may have wished for more of the stand-up part of this special, I think the special was perfectly balanced. For those who are not fans of Jenny Slate, I can see why this may not be the most enjoyable special, but it's a must-see if you enjoy Slate and her personality/style of comedy; it's a sweet, honest, introspective watch that I absolutely loved and thought was perfectly done.
