      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Rothaniel isn't a conventionally funny stand-up special, but Jerrod Carmichael's eye-opening candor and masterful storytelling ensure it's never less than a captivating one.

Dallas H It was an incredibly personal conversation that could be more of a therapy session than a standup comedy special. I appreciate his honesty in this one and felt it was more of a personal confession than anything else. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/24 Full Review phillip j Raw, honest, sensitive, real. Everyone should watch this Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This was not a comedy special, but a piece of exceptional performance art. It was masterful storytelling, an autobiography of sorts. It was written masterfully. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys masterful telling of the human condition. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member A beautiful, intimate and thoughtful comedy special that finds Carmichael vulnerable, at times lost for words, and yes, very funny. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Jerrod Carmichael's new comedy special, Rothaniel, directed by Bo Burnham, was deeply touching and gratyfing. From start to finish this was a treat. It was truly funny yet so personal, and honest, and somehow that honesty and rawness was the most beautiful thing about this. The way this was shot and directed only made me feel more, especially on deeply personal moments when the camera was focused directly on his face. That was really smart of Bo. My God I love this so much. Please watch it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I swear once he comes out it's like the show stops being about a man telling jokes to a pity party. Seriously even when he comes out he has this 5 second pause then looks up at the audience like "Oh yall not gonna clap for that?" When I heard he was coming out I thought it would be more of the witty and charismatic guy I grew to love but maybe he should have taken more time to love and except himself before doing this clearly his confidence is not all there. Inkoo Kang Washington Post As Carmichael visibly strives to be okay with the vulnerability that comes with his new candor — a rare spectacle in itself that manages to fascinate rather than drag down the hour — the audience adapts itself into part of the act... May 9, 2022 Full Review Aisha Harris NPR It's a profoundly immersive experience that pushes the boundaries of stand-up and confessional art. May 9, 2022 Full Review Kathryn VanArendonk New York Magazine/Vulture He may be cold, as he says, and selfish, and angry, and sad. He’s also masterful, and hilarious, and more thoughtful about what comedy is and what we ask it to be than anyone else working right now. May 9, 2022 Full Review Cate Young Thirty, Flirty + Film "With skill and urgency, Carmichael creates a truth that reflects not just himself, but the painful pasts we all share — and figures out how to not be as sick as his secrets." Nov 19, 2022 Full Review Shelli Nicole Vogue Like Jerrod Carmichael, we try to heal from the self-hatred—and when we do, hopefully there is less suffering when we look at the names we left behind... May 9, 2022 Full Review Steve Murray ArtsATL The show feels like a very personal experiment, made public, and it’s a touching, brave one. May 9, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
