Tim Grierson Screen International This archival documentary presents its subject as an enigma and a force of nature, a rock ’n’ roller whose passion and demons fueled his volcanic music. Jun 1, 2022 Full Review Peter Howell Toronto Star Jerry Lee likes to boast that he’s the real king of rock ’n’ roll, not his late frenemy Elvis Presley. This doc lends credence to that claim. Rated: 3/4 May 31, 2022 Full Review Philip De Semlyen Time Out If you’re looking for a more probing look at the man behind the balls of fire, or a pan back to place him in a broader context, Coen’s rockumentary will fall just a little short of satisfying. Rated: 3/5 May 24, 2022 Full Review Barbara Shulgasser Common Sense Media Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind is a gem, a story about a startlingly talented, self-described "sinner," told without comment or judgment. May 22, 2024 Full Review Stephen Silver The SS Ben Hecht Your mileage may vary when it comes to spending a couple of hours with someone like this. Rated: 3.5/5 May 9, 2024 Full Review Damon Wise Deadline Hollywood Daily What Trouble In Mind does deceptively well is to remind us that, without these very real torments, these incendiary performances might never have existed. Michael W This music documentary was great. The entire crew did a great job on bringing the story of the legendary rock and country singer Jerry Lee Lewis. They really go into detail on his life and everything he went through during his life and career. If you haven't seen this documentary yet, check it out sometime. It's a must see. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/17/24 Full Review Mark Z Actually I am in a bit of shock. I was hoping for an actual documentary but what we got was a series of clips -great clips as they may be- without a timeline or narration. I can expect this from an amateur Youtuber who can get their hands on plenty of footage and easily string it together and call it a documentary but from a Cohen? I have no idea what is going on, but I was waiting patiently for a documentary that never launched. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/08/24 Full Review Bob S This is a weird "documentary," almost entirely consisting of stitched-together old TV interviews and performance video clips. There is no narration. At the film's end there are a few captioned sentences about Lewis' marriages and death, but nothing of any depth. I was stunned to see that the film was directed by Ethan Coen and produced by a number of music notables including Mick Jagger. Also, it seemed that there were more clips of "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On" than was necessary. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/07/24 Full Review Read all reviews
