Critics Consensus

Jigsaw definitely won't win many converts to the Saw franchise, but for longtime fans, it should prove a respectably revolting -- if rarely scary -- diversion.

Tara Brady Irish Times The resulting Grand Guignol will please fans, although the gore is never as groundbreaking as the drowning in pig entrails and reserve bear traps of old. Rated: 2/5 Nov 2, 2017 Full Review Matthew Rozsa Salon.com Which brings us to "Jigsaw," which fails for very much the same reasons as "The Mummy" - It was made to launch a franchise rather than because it was actually about something. Carlos None hit like the OG Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/05/25 Full Review Josh A Is this the best Saw movie? Nope. It feels more like a spinoff or a reboot, as it is basically a soft reboot. But is this worse than Saw 3D? No way! I, for one, quite liked it as a reboot. I mean, I wouldn't have given it an 8/10 if I hated it. It has its flaws, sure. The traps are quite weak in this one, but even then, it's Jigsaw's first proper game, it won't be a masterpiece. And, it's a decent way to reboot Saw. What you need to keep in mind is that when this was released, there hadn't been any Saw movies for seven years. And, Saw 3D had a very conclusive ending. So we needed to set up a new character to be our main antagonist and we needed to reboot the series. So, Jigsaw was made. They still had John Kramer to tie this to the previous movies, which worked, and it felt like a transition into a new era. The era of Jigsaw copycats. Logan was a pretty good character as well: he was loyal to John Kramer and his teachings, unlike Amanda and Hoffman. This sets him up as an interesting and fascinating presence and hopefully he gets explored more in the future. The main issue, however, is that this doesn't feel like much of a Saw movie. It has a very distinct tone and is quite different. However, to me, it still felt like a worthy entry in the Saw franchise. My favourite trap in this movie was the Shotgun Trap, which was the finale of the original game. It's simple, sure, but the main reason I like it so much is the tension of it. It feels like a big reveal, seeing John Kramer was cool and the realisation that the keys were in the shotgun was great. It's a diamond in the rough. Overall, it's a solid attempt to reboot the Saw franchise and I hope that it's continued at some point, as Logan has potential. Next up, Spiral: From the Book of Saw! A nice spinoff that I've actually been looking forward to for a while. Should be fun! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/03/25 Full Review Justin T This is very much more of the same. By this point we are at the eighth film in the series so you would expect more of what we have seen seven times before. The production design is good. I didn’t like the cinematography as it looked ugly and like a cheap soap opera. The outcomes of the traps were mostly predictable, not that I minded. It is excessively gory and realistically done which, again, is expected. The story was dull with generic characters. It is satisfying in the way that it delivers on your expectations. I noticed though that the traps never went wrong, they work exactly as designed which I didn’t find realistic. Well not much of this is realistic. Some of what the characters know and their actions don’t make sense. It’s okay, if this was the first in the series I think it would also have been the last. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/02/25 Full Review James B An absolutely amazing saw film that has more violent and modern traps and an ending that will leave you stunned. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/27/24 Full Review Emil P Better than the earlier ones. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/20/24 Full Review Rowan C I genuinely liked this movie and there are still things that we are learning from the past of Jhon Kramer. Matt Passmore who plays Logan Nelson does an excellent job of disgusing himself as any normal human being investigating the Jigsaw murders. He was a pathologist and while the murders are happening, there were flashbacks of Jhon setting up a trap in a farmhouse with people who have commited horrible acts. There was a detective named Halloran and he was corrupt in the way of letting murderes go. Logan started a game where there were only 3 players in the barn, and it was always meant to be him and Detective Holloran as the last two players. We got flashbacks of the old trap which was the same and it was 5 players that were fighting for their lives. It came down to the last two players in which the woman shot herself because she was too greedy. That shell contained the keys which were destroyed and they both ended up dead. Jhon was running the old trap, and Logan was apart of that trap for a mistake he made. Jhon decided to save Logans' life because Logan made a honest mistake because of his wifes passing. Logans' assistant was obsessed with Jigsaw and she had a whole lair of Jigsaw traps. Logan and Eleanor go into the barn where she knew the game was going on, and they are met with Detective Holloran who put a gun to their heads. Soon after, they were all drugged and the last two found themselves in a room with laser cutters. Logan has been framing Holloran the whole movie and Logan knew that his allibi would checkout no matter what. The premise of the game was to confess your sins and Holloran clicked Logans' button first in which Logan confessed. Logan ended up dying but it was all faked and that is when it was revealed that Logan was the copycat Jigsaw. Logan blamed Holloran for letting a criminal informant go for supposedly killing his wife. It was always a deathtrap with no way to win and Holloran ended up getting sliced with the lasers. The movie ends with Logan walking out of the building and he knows that no one is going to blame him. Overall, I thought it was a huge step up from 3D and it was one interesting film to watch.
