      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

It's uneven -- and it lacks the primal power of its subject's classic recordings -- but Jimi: All Is By My Side offers a well-acted alternative take on the Hendrix myth.

Adil B terrible movie. paints him as an abuser and an adulterer. do your research and don't watch this movie. GARBAGE Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/07/24 Full Review eddie b I don't relate to many of the negative reviews. André Benjamin gives a quintessential performance as Jimi. The editing is also top-notch and helps convey the lens in which Jimi most likely viewed the world through. Highly recommend if you're fan of Jimi and the era. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Horrible. Ignores the accounts of Jimi's girlfriend in London at the time, and portrays him as a woman-hating, misogynist who beats her. She's written an autobiography for gods sake! Instead the dumb director pisses-off every Hendrix fan and goes of what some disgruntled former associate in New York wrote instead. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member All is By my Side lacks the actual look in Hendrix’s musical genius and the lower budget sucks in not having actual rights to the songs. Andre 3000 still lifts the film well on his shoulders as the late guitarist Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/12/19 Full Review Audience Member The credits on RT are a bit off as of Feb 2018. Hayley Atwell played Kathy Etchingham. Imogen Poots played Linda Keith. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member THis is a strange fish. It covers the period from Hendrix being an unknown sideman to the eve of topping the bill at Monterey, but it does so without any of his own songs because his estate had a hissy fit. THat rather pulls the rug from under its feet, mainly leaving rather generic blues jamming and little other music. Well acted, yes indeed, but a lot seems to have been left in the editing room judging from references to people not in the film at Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Zeba Blay Shadow and Act What’s left is a good performance by Benjamin, some interesting set pieces, and the general feeling that something, still, is missing. Sep 14, 2022 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) The woozy soundtrack and jump-cut visuals add a touch of period hallucinogenics, but the intimate detail never rings true. Rated: 2/5 Oct 26, 2014 Full Review Wendy Ide Times (UK) What is the point of a musician biopic if you don't get to hear the soundtrack to their life? Rated: 2/5 Oct 23, 2014 Full Review Q.V. Hough Vague Visages "A Hendrix biopic can be tackled in a variety of ways, but a director should either commit to gonzo audio/visual techniques or simply let the performances take over." Jun 27, 2022 Full Review Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema A less than compelling lead character, a biopic about a musician with nary a song from said musician, and a cliché depiction of sexual proclivities. Rated: 2/5 Nov 6, 2021 Full Review Alex Denney NME (New Musical Express) Andre Benjamin gives a magnetic performance as Jimi Hendrix. Rated: 3/5 Apr 22, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews
