Jirga movingly depicts the weight of a soldier's grief -- and the human capacity for change and forgiveness in the wake of awful tragedy.

I hope this film will find an audience who can discern the message, and look beyond the 'entertainment' value, although this film is, in my opinion, visually beautiful and well paced, to the anti war message contained within. A wonderful film made with love, and heart. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member An emotionally riveting movie with a surprisingly small amount of dialogue. The scenery is consistently breathtaking with the cinematography making full use of it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member A film with little dialogue, mainly shot on amateur equipment under the noses of the Taliban. Not great but good. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member This is not the usual war porn. Its an original and touching story about an australian soldier dealing with killing an innocent afghan, going back to look for his victims family and make amends. Loved it. Carlos Aguilar Los Angeles Times A remarkable truthfulness shepherds Benjamin Gilmour's tightly written and conscientiously produced drama "Jirga" as it renders an image of Afghanistan not as a ravaged battleground but as an arrestingly rich land. Aug 1, 2019 Full Review Glenn Kenny New York Times This movie is undeniably a remarkable achievement. You wish it had just a little more dramatic heft. Jul 25, 2019 Full Review Karl Quinn The Age (Australia) The strain of making it sometimes shows, but [Jirga] is a quite remarkable piece of work all the same. Jan 5, 2019 Full Review Joanne Laurier World Socialist Web Site Despite interesting shots of Afghanistan, Jirga is a hopeless, moralistic tale... Aug 7, 2020 Full Review M.V. Moorhead Phoenix Magazine This cinema verité drama, shot guerrilla-style in Afghanistan by director Benjamin Gilmour and star Smith, with a supporting cast of Afghans recruited on location, is a bit of a marvel. Jan 6, 2020 Full Review Mark Dujsik Mark Reviews Movies Its overall message ... is important, although the steps it takes to get there are sometimes questionable -- especially during one lengthy passage.
