Philippa Hawker The Age (Australia) John Doe: Vigilante starts in promising fashion then fizzles. Dolen and writer Stephen M. Coates give Doe a narrow focus: his targets are obvious malefactors, all male, ranging from paedophiles to sadists. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 15, 2014 Full Review Christy Lemire RogerEbert.com This is supposed to be a thriller, by the way. It's more of a slog, not so much a whodunit as a whydunit-and by the end, it's: Who cares? Rated: 1/4 Mar 21, 2014 Full Review Inkoo Kang Los Angeles Times The fatal flaw of "John Doe" is its focus on ideas, rather than people. The protagonist's victims are so cartoonishly evil they might as well be twirling their mustaches before being shot in the head. Mar 20, 2014 Full Review John Noonan FILMINK (Australia) Great to look at, and with an aftertaste that lingers, what you get out of John Doe: Vigilante will depend solely on the way that you swing with this thorny issue. Oct 16, 2014 Full Review Andrew L. Urban Urban Cinefile Although a bit muddle headed about what tone to adopt and confused about its moral stances, John Doe provides a talking point, if nothing else, about how society should respond to the inefficiencies of a justice system and police effectiveness Oct 12, 2014 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member John Doe: Vigilante can't fully escape the flaws of its out of order narrative, but don't let its low-budget exterior or seemingly deluded ambitions fool you! It actually achieves compelling, relevant and satisfying entertainment. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member a more cerebral yet violent Death wish vein movie. Probably doesn't have near the booms and janky jersey shore gansta vibe for todays dumbed down audience, same with the jaded "critics" whom 90% wouldn't know a good movie unless it starred themselves. Probably too much talk and self introspection between the blood for the average American movie goer. if you're above all that you'll love it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member "An Odd Way To Change The World" - The Quote Of The Investigating Detective That Sums Up The Whole Story. The Harsh Approach To Apathy On Crime & Soft-Justice Has It's Place In The Democratic Thought Lexicon, But The Issue Of How Far Do You Swing The Pendulum Of Justice Each Way?? Death-Penalties Vs Therapeutic Outcomes, What Works Basically Boiled Down To A Carrot Or A Stick. As Complex As All This Philosophy Is, The Way It Is Digested & Portrayed Here Is Simple, Ad-Hoc & Obtuse. It Lacks An Intelligent Delivery, With It Being Rather Preachy Without Sensitivity To Core Issues That Drive Criminal Behaviour. The Low-Budget Style Doesn't Help Either, I Won't Be Recommending It To Anyone. Unless You're Looking For Unintelligent Crud That Lacks Style. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I really enjoyed this movie. It was a good story, it kept moving and a very good twist at the end. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Great movie, but thought the ending was weird Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member I happened to pick this movie as I was just browsing through the selections of "free" movies on our on demand cable page. And I'm glad that I did! I really like revenge type movies, and this one does not disappoint! However, it does differ from the straight up killing/mayhem that some of this genre get into. This film has more of a political/social component that combines John Doe's actions with the state of the society around him. And with that, society's effect on him, and then, his effect on society! And, for my tastes, there is the killing for revenge too! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews
