It's far more conventional than the life it honors, but John Lewis: Good Trouble remains a worthy tribute to an inspiring activist and public servant.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com I didn't realize just how much I needed director Dawn Porter's latest documentary John Lewis: Good Trouble until it was over. Rated: 3.5/4 Jul 10, 2020 Full Review Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) A great movie to watch now and see how a struggle gets conducted. Jul 9, 2020 Full Review Priscilla Ward Salon.com There's a lot to glean from the battleground Lewis has stood on for six decades while demanding fairness, a hope, and dream, of every American. Good Trouble is of importance now more than ever. Jul 6, 2020 Full Review Annlee Ellingson CineWomen The film struggles with pacing. ... But it’s arresting to watch some of the rare archival footage — even more so to watch Lewis watch it for the first time himself. Aug 17, 2022 Full Review Craig D. Lindsey Crooked Marquee Good Trouble - Lewis's trademark mantra- serves as a sterling chronicle of the work Lewis (who turned 80 last February) did as a civil-rights activist... Rated: B+ Aug 30, 2021 Full Review Malik Adán REELYDOPE Taken as a melange of moments, Good Trouble is a broad piece of fan service, capturing many truths in passing but critically engaging none. Georgan G This bio documentary is about a real hero. It's uplifting to watch his history & how much love he was given in return. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/23/24 Full Review Audience Member Talk about idolatry, this does not hold up to reality Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review dave d John Lewis was a legend and a hero in the fight for the Civil Rights. He stated early in the mostly autobiographical documentary feature that "His biggest fear is waking up one day and seeing the Democracy gone." Fake outrage from a man that became quite disingenuous in his later years. Frankly, his neoliberalism is a large reason for the mess the USA is in. It would have been one thing to endorse Hillary Clinton in the hotly contested Democratic Primary of 2016, but Lewis also railed on another champion of Civil Rights Bernie Sanders. That forever tarnished a great man in a way that MUST be talked about. Will it be in this film by CNN? Not only do they get the later years of his life wrong, but they don't give him enough credit for the early stages of his life and the remarkable hurdles he helped leap. John Lewis showing his artwork. UGH. What a mess. Final Score: 4.2/10 Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Not very interesting. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member He's an interesting figure, but this isn't the film I was hoping for. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/23 Full Review Audience Member An excellent, moving film. It gives us the viewers a crystal clear insight into the late Rep. John Lewis's life through interviews with him, family, friends, staff, and colleagues. It's portrayal of Lewis shows a man with imperfections but of integrity and strength of character and conviction. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
