      What to know

      Critics Consensus

Jojo Rabbit's blend of irreverent humor and serious ideas definitely won't be to everyone's taste -- but either way, this anti-hate satire is audacious to a fault. Read critic reviews

I do wish it was less twee in some regards but I am impressed that the movie seems to have managed avoiding the satire paradox.

Taika Waititi cuts his own trail in this light touch look at the forces of social indoctrination and how one allows one's own identity to be formed. Set in the end of WW2 Nazi Germany, our young hero's course is set for him by perhaps the worst of a badgering throng since the dawn of history. The actors, following the director/writer's lead, are appropriately funny, tender and simply human when called to be in what all recognise as intense times. While not necessarily the nail-biter one would hope for, still endearing and not a waste of time, avoiding the boredom one might expect in a setting as over-mined as this one is.

Surprisingly good. Especially after considering that I'd given up on Holocaust & WWII theme and decided not to watch any movie about them. The kid and the director (in the little role he got) have given award winning performances. Sam Rockwell was par excellence. Rest of the cast was also good.

If you're looking for a charming indie coming-of-age dramedy in unusual circumstances, this is a very good pick. If you're looking for something daring, new, which elevates the medium and asks bold questions, look elsewhere. When this was advertised, we all saw it as "Taika's Hitler movie" and I think a lot of people were prepared for something on a Sacha Baron Cohen level of distaste, maybe similar to The Dictator. But that's not what this is, it's actually a low key, charming, even quirky little movie about a boy whose beliefs are challenged through conversation and relationships. It's a worthwhile message shown in the most extreme of circumstances. It's charming and likable, at times hilarious, and other times heartbreaking. It's two leads shine and elevate the whole thing, and of course Taika as Hitler is amazing. If I have a major criticism it's that I wanted more Taika, but really this isn't his movie, it's Jojo's, it's just Taika is an admittedly scene-stealing part of that story. But the story is still good. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it tells its story well and
