After their parents divorce, 12-year-old Josh (Jacob Tierney) and 7-year-old Sam (Noah Fleiss) decide to go on an underage road trip. Sick of being ferried between their distant mother and remarried father, Josh and his brother steal a car and set out for Canada. The runaways' journey gets more interesting when they pick up a drifter named Alison (Martha Plimpton). More bizarre yet, Josh has convinced his little brother that he's a "Strategically Altered Mutant."

Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Josh and S.A.M. is a film that engaged my interest only sporadically, because I couldn't believe its premise and, what's more, didn't care about the characters. And yet in all fairness I'd guess that this movie might be fun for younger viewers. And, as the perplexed dad, Stephen Tobolowsky cements his status as the cinema's foremost nerd-interpreter. Blu B It's not good but it's also pretty harmless stuff. It's basically a family road movie. Everything is pretty mediocre and what you'd expect for something made around this time. Biggest problem is once they get on the road it feels like stuff just kind of happens. Meeting Chris Penn, the girl, and other stuff just very sloppy. The child acting between the two brothers just isn't much to ride home about. There barely ok. But honestly, the biggest problem here is the story is so stupid. They want to get to their Mom by using a lie that the little brother is a secret government weapon and he believes it the whole time because he's an idiot and than add on all the other crazy antics and I don't even know. Somehow they all reconcile in the end and it just is so stupid and unfocused. Yes we stay focused on the two brothers the entire time but the ideas are all over the place. Sometimes it's about the broken parent dynamics, the stupid government project, the sister they pick up, being on the road, Josh coming of age. It never ties these ideas together really or makes them work in a cohesive fashion and some just are forgotten about. Skip this. It's harmless but nothing really to see here. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/25/24 Full Review Steve D Ok film that will at least entertain the kids. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member move is underrated and virtually unknown at this point in cinema Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie is ok but a little bit over the top, the whole adventure thing was pretty cool but it seems in the movie that the parents really didn't seem to care enough that there 2 boys stole a car and they hadn't even heard from them for a while. The funniest parts were when the little kid was driving the (7 yr old one) Because he kinda looked like a cool gangsta with the hat and drove fast... not the greatest movie but good to see if you like movies that are on the road alot Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member I like this. its fun and entertaining Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is scattered with comedic situations, but not enough to make for a memorable movie. Also in the cast are: Stephen Tobolowsky, Joan Allen and Chris Penn. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews
