Critics Consensus

Joy is anchored by a strong performance from Jennifer Lawrence, although director David O. Russell's uncertain approach to its fascinating fact-based tale only sporadically sparks bursts of the titular emotion.

Manuel Betancourt Bitch Media Joy pursues a number of ill-fitting narrative detours that detract from the fascinating story that should be at the core of the movie. While I was rooting for the film-and for Joy herself - ultimately it felt like the film missed a key opportunity. Feb 9, 2021 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint This optimistic, often amusing story is a Lawrence show all the way as she flies the flag for feminism, entrepreneurship and family without missing a beat. Aug 15, 2019 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Oh Mr. Russell, you're nothing if not predictable. Rated: C- Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Josh Slater-Williams Vague Visages A little bit of that magic spread somewhere on Joy's set, since its maestros successfully manage to sell you on a film that's ostensibly about the creation of a cleaning product... Nov 14, 2023 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Equal to the scattered mess of personalities within this central family, the film itself doesn't know what it wants to be and that's a large flaw. Rated: 3/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review There's much to admire about Joy, beginning with another helluva performance by Lawrence. A. M Loved this film on every level. Pure Joy! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review Audience Member Loved this film. It’s my sort of film. Love the script. Enjoyed the way she becomes successful and also how intelligence she is in not getting screwed over. Great performances and again both Jennifer Laurence and Bradley Cooper are excellent. Put these top class actors in any film and you know it’s going to be good. Not to mention, Robert Deniro as well. A bit like Silver Linings in terms of cast. These three is the same film makes this unmissable for me. Sterling performances as always. I read a lot of self help books so I find watching people reach a level of success intriguing and interesting so this was just up my street. Another one of my favourites. Jennifer Lawrence deslumbrantemente entregue… Admirável Joy, uma bela homenagem, determinada, empreendedora e generosa… Linda e divertida biografia… Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/05/24 Full Review Horror fan 4 What a brilliant performance by Jennifer Lawrence. A mixture of great supporting performances make this a wonderfully made movie. Tim Treakle Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Regal R 70/100 - not bad but not great. kind of long and drawn out for what it is. could have been better and there were so many annoying parts that just detract from the overall film Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/07/24 Full Review donnie m Jennifer Lawrence did a really good job in this movie and 'kicked ass' at the end!
