Audience Member The film is lesser known than his other works, probably due to its mere emphasis on romance. The interesting point here is the story device: western-cultured play. Throughout the film, Mizoguchi manages to introduce his audience to the foreign culture (which was relatively unrecognized to the society in Japan at the time), particularly in artistic environment. Sumako's struggle as an artist depicted in the film also gives a subtle comparison to the ambiguous role of women in society, which probably is the purpose of the film, story-wise. If anything, the film isn't too much of a entertainment nor a study. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member It has a certain elegance, and a great performance by Kinuyo Tanaka. But I was fairly underwhelmed, and had hoped for better. I know it's based on a true story, but I didn't find it nearly as compelling as Mizoguchi at his best.
