Thelma Adams AWFJ.org Who knows the heart of women better than Director Pedro Almódovar? Stunning performances, complex characters, brilliance! Nov 4, 2021 Full Review Alexandra Heller-Nicholas ABC News (Australia) Exploding off the screen in a blast of colour and compassion, Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar's Julieta is one of 2016's cinematic treasures. Aug 27, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Despite its shorter length, the film never feels unfulfilled or abbreviated. Its terrific performances, beautiful narrative, and haunting score... are so immersive that decades of life go by without it ever dragging. Rated: A Mar 22, 2017 Full Review Denise Pieniazek Puesta en Escena (AR) Julieta is the latest film by the talented Pedro Almodóvar, which narrates one of the most primary bonds of humanity: the mother-child relationship (daughter in this case), thus marking the director's return to "mother melodrama" Rated: 8.5/10 Jan 12, 2024 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Plain and simple, Almodovar has a remarkable way in which his films extract emotionality and sensual ardor from mundane settings and artful melodrama. Rated: 4/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine While the dramatic arc’s velocity often stalls in the front half, Julieta accrues some real emotional heft as it explores a parent-child dynamic with no happy parties and no easy solution. Ben D Julieta contains a story that didn’t develop emotionally in any conceivable way. While many of the characters are lovely to look at, the lack of a connection made me not really care what happened to them. Xoan (Daniel Grao) has intermittent dalliances with a mutual friend, Ava (Inma Cuesta), the news of which we learn right before he dies removing the gravitas from the moment. Julieta comes in two forms: young (20s, Adriana Ugarte) and older (40s(?) Emma Suárez). When we first meet the younger Julieta, she has an abysmal hairstyle that is so distracting it made me want to fast-forward to more recent memories — we see all of younger Julieta through flashbacks. It’s not a disjointed timeline, but it’s not enjoyable either. Julieta is dejected from her estranged relationship with her daughter, Antia (Sara Jiménez/Priscilla Delgado/Blanca Parés). It’s so unbelievably cruel of Antia to ignore her mother in this capacity, especially since her mother was the victim of the affair, not the perpetrator, that you just want Julieta to not bother with the deadbeat. However, I understand this is much easier said than done, and can see why Julieta would pause her own happiness and a new start in Portugal to remain in Madrid with the hopes of finally reconnecting with her daughter. Fine. But the payoff never comes despite the happy ending. I plan to view all of Almodóvar’s movies in my life, as he is the director for my favorite country, but despite the beauty of its characters and setting — that house on the water up in Galicia truly is something from my Zillow-scouring dreams — Julieta is not a movie I could recommend unless you just need to see Emma Suárez on-screen, which would be understandable Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Zackary T Love me some Pedro Almodóvar and this is a beautiful and brilliantly executed addition to his filmography. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/24 Full Review matthew r Solid film. Worst thing about foreign movies is that they make me want to go tot the towns and countries they are filmed and this one is no different. Madrid is shown as a spicy metropolitan city with beautiful roads and shopping areas. The countryside and mountains are just as beautiful and dreamy as one would expect from Europe. The acting was solid and the plot kept me interested. Only complaint is I would have liked a bit more of an explanation at the end but that is probably just my American nuance of being spoon fed details. At any rate, worth the watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Said S Complex and deeply emotional. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review isla s This is a typically stylish and colourful (visibly colourful) film by Pedro Almodovar. It has a pretty decent sense of mystery about it, although I admit I;m not sure I followed every plot detail. It features decent characterisation and will likely keep people guessing, in terms of what the eventual outcome will be. There is a certain sadness to it, in parts. This is a film you need to concentrate on to fully follow the ins and outs and its certainly an intriguing watch. Not a bad film, not quite what I'd consider excellent but certainly good enough to be worth a watch, I'd recommend this film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
