Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express I'm afraid there's no other way to say it: Kabali is a drag. Rated: 1.5/5 Jul 25, 2016 Full Review Pooja Pande BookMyShow You'll have to be a real cynic with a terrific will power to not enjoy this film. Nov 7, 2018 Full Review J Hurtado ScreenAnarchy Kabali is a step in the right direction for Rajinikanth; let's just hope he keeps on walking. Nov 3, 2017 Full Review Kumuthan Maderya PopMatters Kabali is no generic gangster drama but an intellectually provocative political statement. Rated: 6/10 Jul 28, 2016 Full Review Saibal Chatterjee NDTV Pretty much like any other Rajinikanth starrer, Kabali is more than just a film. It is a full-on event... But having said that, is there anything at all in Kabali that sets it apart in tone and tenor from the superstar's recent outings? Precious little. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 25, 2016 Full Review Mridula Ramadugu Firstpost The story of Kabali is simple and nothing you haven't seen before. It's also clichéd in many aspects. But what drives it is Rajnikanth. Jul 25, 2016 Full Review Read all reviews

Kapil K A simple waste in time of a making. The interesting part is where they cue in the music announcing he's coming back from apprehension 25 years later. After that, it's just its no joke. Just no jokes. Nor actions or thrills or engaging story lines for that matter. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Audience Member Kabali - 8/10. Rajinikanth prior to Kabali was in films which purely celebrated his stardom and created characters that highlighted that stardom. For the longest time that strategy worked, but with the movie Lingaa, he had suffered a badly received movie in the commercial and critical world. So, he took a step back and went forward with acting in more character driven movies. Pa Ranjith, who was fresh off of making the hit Madras, got the opportunity to remould the star. Thus, came Kabali. Though its a little strange to call a huge hit film underrated, it is quite underrated when you look back. Their next collab, Kaala, ended up becoming a more well received film. But in my opinion, Kaala was a stronger and more well crafted movie. One genius thing that Ranjith did was fill the movie with great performers, even in the smallest of roles. By doing so, it helps make those characters matter, even in the smallest of ways. The way they shot this film was terrific as well, really delivering a slick visual palette that brings out the Malaysian backdrop. The character of Kabali is pretty well drawn out too. A man haunted by his past failures and the way he is grizzled by those experiences is really fascinating. One thing that I think makes Rajinikanth an underrated serious actor is his ability to tune into pain. Everyone knows him for his style and flair, but he has this ability to showcase a lost soul in some scenes in this film that makes me wish he were able to do those kinda characters often. Its one of the more well thought out big budget tamil movies in the past decade or so, with some interesting view points amongst the big commercial scenes. Hopefully it gets more due as time goes on. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Boring and an excellent example of what a gangster movie, moreover a Rajini one, should not be. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Santhosh s Ok but an average movie with more of sentiment but nothing work out perfectly Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/23/19 Full Review Audience Member Boring and an excellent example of what a gangster movie, moreover a Rajini one, should not be.
