Sometimes I thought Kangaroo Island was about to devolve into Hallmarkian slosh and lose me completely, only for David (a first-time feature film-maker) to get me back on side, more or less, by creating small moments that really resonate.

At first glance, Kangaroo Island looks like it will be a typical drama about a woman who goes back to her hometown and reconnects with a past love. But this well-acted movie has meaningful layers about mortality and family relationships.

Feels like an overlong soap of family issues randomly popping up. I thought it be more effective focusing on love triangle arc & not adding more issues. This feels like streaming where a new issue pops up one after another to keep you watching but with no real story. Expected for TV but totally unacceptable for an indie movie. Ending not clever. Wud’ve been nice to see an emu but nothing, just kangaroos.

After hearing it was a great tourism promotion video of beautiful Kangaroo Island, I was delighted it was that and much more. It was about complex family relationships, resolving conflict, facing harsh realities including death and dying and how the characters move through all of that. Really enjoyable movie. That scenery was the best!
