dustin d Suzuki Seijun's early yakuza film is stylish and has a few wonderful scenes. The only thing missing is a story. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member You get occasional glimpses of the greatness to come in the next few years, but this certainly isn't one of the more engaging Suzuki outings. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A low-key tale by current standards, Suzuki contrasts the fate of those who honour their social mores (in this case those of the yakuza) which gives them a strength of character but which allows them to be manipulated by those less scrupulous. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Seijun Suzuki has made some wonderfully weird films. This, however, is actually one of his more accessible offerings, but still pretty strange. Kanto Wanderer serves as a prime example of a director honing his craft while taking chances and still producing fine entertainment. Backgrounds suddenly turn bright red, blue or yellow during dramatic changes from scene to scene, while other background colors might represent certain characters. It's a well crafted film with nice compositions but ultimately, Kanto Wanderer feels less on par in comparison with Suzuki's other films such as Tokyo Drifter, Branded To Kill and my personal favorite Youth Of The Beast. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Has some of the style but none of the energy of Branded to Kill or Tokyo Drifter. A bit too slow, and occasionally confusing. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member the more i watch seijun suzuki's films, the more he makes his way up my list of favorite directors. kanto wanderer is a little more of a traditional style of filmmaking than branded to kill and tokyo drifter, whose bizarre mixture of styles i prefer, but the amazing suzuki visuals are still there. it's filled with shots that just made my jaw drop. the story isn't too spectacular, but the camera work is more than enough to keep the viewer interested. it's also kind of fun to sit and pick out all of the shots that tarantino stole for kill bill...the man certainly did his homework.
