Meticulous and preternaturally skilled, Kate is the perfect specimen of a finely tuned assassin at the height of her game. But when she uncharacteristically blows an assignment targeting a member of the yakuza in Tokyo, she quickly discovers she's been poisoned, a brutally slow execution that gives her less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her killers. As her body swiftly deteriorates, Kate forms an unlikely bond with the teenage daughter of one of her past victims. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson, and directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, Kate follows a burned assassin's furious pursuit of one last self-appointed job.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Mary Elizabeth Winstead does reliably gripping work in the title role, but Kate is disappointingly derivative of numerous other female assassin films.

Audience Says

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is great, but Kate doesn't do enough to set itself apart from all the other recent "assassin out for revenge" movies.

Director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan makes great use of the Japanese setting and of newcomer Miku Patricia Martineau, who becomes Kate's unlikely local sidekick, but he might have done more with Woody Harrelson. Go to Full Review

Kate gestures at being different, something fresh and subversive, but at the end of the day, it's just reheating old clichés. Go to Full Review

Kate is the kind of movie you put on in the background while you fold your laundry. For the most part, it’s a revenge film that makes only a little sense as to why the person is seeking revenge. Go to Full Review

It’s not a perfect story from beginning to end either. While these action sequences are entertaining and disturbing, Kate’s characterization and her relationship with Ani, and the result is predictable. Go to Full Review

Kate delivers everything I could ever ask of a hard-hitting revenge-driven action movie. With a badass lead, great chemistry, and action moments that left me flinching on multiple occasions, this movie is a must-watch for the action aficionados out there. Go to Full Review

Dan B @danbgoestothemovies 4d It's just an incredibly predictable, shallow, mindless action flick, with lots of Japanese cultural references forced in. I imagine someone on the production team just really like anime, and samurai swords, and ninjas, and wanted to force cliche Japanese references into the film. You could walk away from the movie for minutes at a time, come back to it and fear nothing about missing something important. Winstead's performance anchors the film from getting really bad, but there's just nothing new to see here. The main plot driver of the film is scientifically inaccurate, and you know who the bad guy is going to be and what the plot twist is after a few minutes. The sad bit is that the premise had promise. There was an opportunity to make a good cloak-and-dagger spy flick here, but they went a very different direction. Stand alone movie that had it been delivered in a different time maybe critics would be less noisy. Kate was portrayed amazing and her part was played top notch. I was completely sold on performance and directing. Even the young actors did great. See more Peter F @RT28007450 Apr 19 A genre movie with a story you've seen countless times already - and yet it works, because it has more heart, more style, more substance, better acting, better visuals than most. A pity for the choice of Woody Harrelson as one of the key characters, cause he's the weak link here. Still, a revenge story (and a bit more) well done. See more R. F. F @RT36265540 Apr 18 Perfect vibes. Definitely my late-night comfort flick. See more Jithin K @Jithin Mar 12 There were parts of this that was incredible but other parts that were garbage. The script being cliche is not the problem, it trying to bring together so many cliches in a way that makes it so derivative that the cool parts gets almost overshadowed by the stupid writing is what the problem is. Still Mary Elizabeth Winstead kicking ass in a Neon lit Japanese city, sometimes showing Tokyo Ghoul on the side of the buildings is just too cool for me to not like it. I really liked it definitely would watch it again. See more Read all reviews
