Mary Elizabeth Winstead does reliably gripping work in the title role, but Kate is disappointingly derivative of numerous other female assassin films.Read critic reviews

Meticulous and preternaturally skilled, Kate is the perfect specimen of a finely tuned assassin at the height of her game. But when she uncharacteristically blows an assignment targeting a member of the yakuza in Tokyo, she quickly discovers she's been poisoned, a brutally slow execution that gives her less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her killers. As her body swiftly deteriorates, Kate forms an unlikely bond with the teenage daughter of one of her past victims. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson, and directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, Kate follows a burned assassin's furious pursuit of one last self-appointed job.
I saw this pink-themed movie poster thumbnail in my Netflix feed and thought to myself: "I already saw this over-caffeinated lackluster action flick with KATE Beckinsale -- what gives?" But that's Mary Elizabeth Winstead in that thumbnail who I like even more than THAT Kate.
Well, they radiated the WRONG bad-ass bitch. I love MEW's transition to action hero. She killed it in Fargo season three and 10 Cloverfield Lane and was a fine addition to Birds of Prey. And she's good here. She's not the traditional model-esque action hero like Beckinsale, Milla Jovovich, Charlize Theron, or Angelina Jolie, but frankly, that makes her more attractive to me. Don't get me wrong -- she's beautiful. But Winstead is the lady a guy should want as their life partner.
She actually reminds me a lot of Sigourney Weaver as Ripley -- smart, capable, no bullshit, not sexualized, and she does NOT fuck around.
This is a fairly run-of-the mill action yarn set in Tokyo, a frequent spot for Yakuza gangsta revenge flicks, but Winstead elevates the whole mediocre affair.
This is the third pink-hued Netflix action jaunt counting Kate and Gunpowder Milkshake and I can safely say this by far the best of the three. I want to see an Alien reboot with Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ripley.
