Meticulous and preternaturally skilled, Kate is the perfect specimen of a finely tuned assassin at the height of her game. But when she uncharacteristically blows an assignment targeting a member of the yakuza in Tokyo, she quickly discovers she's been poisoned, a brutally slow execution that gives her less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her killers. As her body swiftly deteriorates, Kate forms an unlikely bond with the teenage daughter of one of her past victims. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson, and directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, Kate follows a burned assassin's furious pursuit of one last self-appointed job.

Critics Consensus

Mary Elizabeth Winstead does reliably gripping work in the title role, but Kate is disappointingly derivative of numerous other female assassin films.

Audience Says

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is great, but Kate doesn't do enough to set itself apart from all the other recent "assassin out for revenge" movies.

Director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan makes great use of the Japanese setting and of newcomer Miku Patricia Martineau, who becomes Kate's unlikely local sidekick, but he might have done more with Woody Harrelson. Go to Full Review

Kate gestures at being different, something fresh and subversive, but at the end of the day, it's just reheating old clichés. Go to Full Review

Kate is the kind of movie you put on in the background while you fold your laundry. For the most part, it’s a revenge film that makes only a little sense as to why the person is seeking revenge. Go to Full Review

It’s not a perfect story from beginning to end either. While these action sequences are entertaining and disturbing, Kate’s characterization and her relationship with Ani, and the result is predictable. Go to Full Review

Kate delivers everything I could ever ask of a hard-hitting revenge-driven action movie. With a badass lead, great chemistry, and action moments that left me flinching on multiple occasions, this movie is a must-watch for the action aficionados out there. Go to Full Review

See more Calvin O Jun 7 This film is your typical double-hard assassin movie. Well made - I like the lead and supporting cast - plus it looks good, is watchable, but ultimately is generic and predictably unoriginal. The plot will have no surprises, and will be the least interesting aspect, but it won't offend you too much either. Maybe as a slightly older person, I have seen too many movies like this to be involved and excited by it. Were I half my age, with less experience of such film, I might have better things to say. As it stands, if you like this kind of assassin getting revenge movie, you'll have a good time. Just do not expect anything new here. See more Slick R @SlickReviewer May 21 I do not and will never see Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a bad azz assassin. She will forever remind me of Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Basically the premise of "Kate" is the same as the Jason Statham movie "Crank". See more Trucio M Feb 19 The beginning was good, suddenly it becomes a none sense movie, she is about to die and still fighting. I was able to see 3 mistakes where you can see the is fake punches or kicks, that is disappointing See more Richard L Jan 31 Badass in every way, entertaining, lots of action and cool music. Side characters were underdeveloped. See more Read all reviews
