      Critics Consensus

Though Jackman charms, Kate and Leopold is bland and predictable, and the time travel scenario lacks inner logic.

Tony E This is an oldie but a goodie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Nick S Re-watched it after more than 15 years. One of the rare romantic movies I enjoy (probably due to the science/nerdy twist of time travel. I used to have a huge crush on Meg Ryan which has since disappeared but the movie is still charming and watchable. I'd recommend, even though it didn't age as well as I'd hoped it to. Bonus points for Wolverine and Sabretooth being in another movie together. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/06/23 Full Review Delaney E I always align with most ratings for movies. As a movie buff ratings are something I value. I am BAFFLED this movie doesn't have better reviews. I was laughing non-stop, in between I was blown away by the attention to detail!! A wonderful feel good movie with exceptional performances, especially from Hugh Jackman. It's one of my favourite movies now! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/06/23 Full Review Carlos N Great fun and silliness. The perfect date movie and one I used to show to my students in class when teaching inventions. It's amazing how many thing we take for granted that are part of our lives today. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review matthew d Absolutely charming with hilarious comedy no matter how many times I see it. Director James Mangold's romantic comedy Kate & Leopold (2001) is adorable and very sweet with a polite duke romancing a cynical modern woman. Mangold's direction delivers playful science-fiction storytelling alongside cute romantic comedy for an entirely unique movie. I've seen Kate & Leopold easily over a dozen times and it always makes me laugh at its irreverent humor and find the chivalrous flirtations charming. Writers James Mangold and Steven Rogers bring a loving politeness and considerate kindness to their romance drama and a concern for all things gentlemanly for their pleasant humor. Editor David Brenner cuts easily between contemporary marketing board room meetings and cute romantic dates for a fast pace and easy charm. Kate & Leopold's 118 minutes feels half that length. Stuart Dryburgh's cinematography has a warmth for the past sequences and cool wide panning shots that love to keep us with the characters as they venture around New York. Every close-up feels so intimate and caring for these characters as they experience tender romantic feelings. Meg Ryan is hilarious as the jaded over love romantic heroine Kate McKay. She's beautiful and funny as she's super mean to Jackman. Their combative dynamic makes for a fun rapport. Hugh Jackman is legitimately one of the most handsome and charming romantic heroes ever as His Grace Leopold Alexis Elijah Walker Thomas Gareth Mountbatten, 3rd Duke of Albany. Jackman effortlessly delivers monologue after monologue about polite manners of loving every aspect of life with a romantic finesse. Liev Schreiber is funny as the crazy scientist and Kate's loser ex-boyfriend Stuart Besser. Breckin Meyer is hysterical as the out of work actor Charlie McKay. I always think of Kate & Leopold whenever I see Meyer in any other movie. He's so funny, kind, and charming in his own goofy way. Natasha Lyonne is adorable as Kate's friend Darci. Bradley Whitford is channeling every sleazy boss as J. J. Camden with his repulsive manipulations to try to sleep with Kate with his pretentious spouting of pseudo-artistic nonsense. Charlotte Ayanna is so pretty as Charlie's love interest Patrice. Kristen Schaal is as funny as ever as Miss Tree, who hopes to marry Hugh Jackman's Duke Leopold. I love Stephanie Sanditz' empathetic nurse Gretchen. Viola Davis gets an early career cameo as the tough Policewoman ticketing Jackman. Director James Mangold cameos as the offended director at the test screening defending the art of cinema, appropriately. Production designer Mark Friedberg creates old bridge structure sets and neat New York apartments. Jess Gonchor and Miguel López-Castillo's art direction looks lovely for the past ballroom sets. Set decorator Stephanie Carroll adds all these neat props for the kitchen and living room for Leopold to play around with for the fun fish out of water gags. Composer Rolfe Kent creates a really smooth and romantic score for Kate & Leopold. I love the use of "Moon River" from Breakfast at Tiffany's too for the midnight listening cuddle scene. Donna Zakowska's slick uniforms for Hugh Jackman complete his performance with a dapper aesthetic and tailored suits galore. In all, Kate & Leopold is adorable and one of the most romantic movies I've ever seen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review jm m I love this movie! Such great chemistry between Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman (first movie I ever saw him in). Funny, sweet - a perfect romantic comedy.
