Audience Member Sled dog adventure story set in Canada around the 1940's with a boy who's a 7th or 8th grader. Sam is having a tough time with a new school, new home, and new step-dad. He's oppositional. If you like dog stories, this works. The kid is persistent and so is the dog. Young Sam remains frozen in time. He still can't accept the trauma of eight years ago: The disappearance and apparent death of his rugged explorer father in the Arctic wilderness. His mother and stepfather try to help, but eventually Sam meets a wild dog that is identical to one of his father's sled dogs whom he names Kayla. The boy and the dog befriend each other despite the wariness of his family and the hostility of the townspeople who think the dog is responsible for killing livestock. "It would've been better to face the truth. And one day, you're going to have to face it, too." Sam has such a good devotion to his late father's memory that the pain is too much for him to face the fact that who he admired is now gone, and with his mother quoting those words trying to accept the truth is all part of growing up. The 1997-released Kayla: A Cry In The Wilderness is a great, heartwarming film intended for the whole family, and it's something that shows an example of love, loyalty, and self-sacrifice. I've watched it thrice in my lifetime so I could understand its storyline well while I was fascinated by the portrayal of man's best friend, the dog. That element of companionship helped the boy good understanding of things really well, and Sam may have a rocky relationship with his stepfather but at least it would take time to finally accept each other. Overall, I can say that it's a great story; I bet the Kaylas of the world are here reading my review right now, so LOL to that. (The movie is based on a novel by Elizabeth Van Stanwyk, evocatively photographed in the Canadian wilderness, and set in Quebec in the 1920s.)
