Joanne Laurier World Socialist Web Site Unfortunately, it is impossible to separate the movie's tongue-in-cheek tone and its antics from the serious subject matter, resulting in a very inconsistent work. Jul 14, 2020 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com All in all, a worthwhile and satisfying film about one family's struggle to stay together in extraordinary circumstances. Aug 5, 2019 Full Review C.J. Prince Way Too Indie Unfortunately, The Land of Hope is a total miss despite its heavy subject matter. Rated: 5/10 Jul 2, 2019 Full Review Anton Bitel Film4 Land of Hope tends to shout from a soapbox what little new it has to say, but it does boast some fine performances (especially from Natsuyago Isao as the family patriarch) and the odd poetic touch that speaks louder than any words. Jun 11, 2013 Full Review Donald J. Levit ReelTalk Movie Reviews The subject is one for indignation and urgency. But despite straightforward no-frills treatment in 'The Land of Hope,' nothing rises above the predictable ordinary. Mar 16, 2013 Full Review Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy Too much of the film works too well to even consider marking it as a failure, but this is one seriously erratic movie. Rated: 6/10 Oct 13, 2012 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member A slightly comical but deeply moving account of a community split by a nuclear reactor accident. Lovely performances from the actors playing the mother and father. The father's portrayal of positivity in the face of tragedy and concealed pain was very well done, and the mother's progressive dementia was devastating to watch. Some of the other storylines woven in to this felt rather half - hearted though. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/14/20 Full Review Audience Member This may mark the first time in a Japanese film where the main family actually all really love each other, and *openly*. And that's nice to see. I like Sion Sono's more grounded work, He presents really intersting, unique characters who are often just fun to watch. This film is very sombre in tone, though not without it's quirks. Sono's usual style was present but very subdued, making a simpler film, but a very capable one. I only found the story of the younger couple, of the neighboring family to be unnecessary to this film. It feels random and goes nowhere, either cut it entirely or build it into something meaningful, I say. Not sure about that ending though. I'm kept on the fence as to whether or not I like it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member I found it though, touching and sad to watch at the same time. A good movie. I want to give many stars for the elderly couple acting and I just believed in them and felt for them. I did like somehow some of their son story as well but the third couple I didn't care about really nor did I find the acting very good. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Sad story all caused by the father's stupidity. All those drama was unnecessary if they all left together.
