Dave (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), aka Kick-Ass, and Mindy (Chloë Grace Moretz), aka Hit Girl, are trying to live as normal teenagers and briefly form a crime-fighting team. After Mindy is busted and forced to retire as Hit Girl, Dave joins a group of amateur superheroes led by Col. Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), a reformed mobster. Just as Dave and company start to make a real difference on the streets, the villain formerly known as Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) rears his head yet again.

Kick-Ass 2, while thankfully sanitizing the extreme storyline from the comics it’s adapting, seems to be a rollercoaster of hits and misses based on its current direction. The dynamic of the cast, the humor, and the action remain, but the story is quite convoluted and doesn’t elevate the franchise to the same level as the first. In reality, it risks portraying this version as an inappropriate teen comedy that sexualizes underaged actresses at the time and simplistically follows up on a successful first film. Grading: C+
