Physical media reigns supreme in KIM'S VIDEO, an elegiac tribute to the iconic video store in New York City that inspired a generation of cinephiles before it mysteriously closed its doors and sent its legendary film archive to a small and slightly dubious Sicilian village for "safekeeping." Kim's Video represents something of a missed opportunity, but this incredible story is gripping enough to overcome an uneven telling.

Peter Rainer FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's a fascinating story, but the movie is a mess. Apr 17, 2024 Full Review Brent Simon AV Club A nonfiction work of swirling whimsy and rabbit-hole intrigue that eschews mere nostalgic appreciation in favor of a cockeyed hybrid approach that amuses and bemuses in equal measure. Rated: B- Apr 12, 2024 Full Review Richard Brody New Yorker The gratifications and fascinations offered by “Kim’s Video” are inseparable from frustrations, but it may yet prove powerful if it inspires other filmmakers, historians, and critics to examine this terrain more thoroughly. Apr 11, 2024 Full Review Erin Free FILMINK (Australia) An absolute must for film fans. Rated: 18.5/20 Jun 11, 2024 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed ...Kim’s Video can only be described as a frustrating documentary that is sorely focused on the wrong things for far too long of its run time. Rated: 2/5 Apr 30, 2024 Full Review Manuel Betancourt FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) There's so much here, but ultimately it's a mess and doesn't quite do justice to what I imagine Kim's Video and its legacy is supposed to have. James W I don't normally watch a lot of documentaries but I tried this one based on the subject matter and I used to run video stores back in the day. This movie had me glued to my seat at how crazy of a story it was. If you were ever a fan of video stores check this movie out ! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/30/24 Full Review dave d A fascinating story that is somewhat bungled by David Redmon and Ashley Sabin in a feature documentary that is bat crazy. Redmon, who narrates, is all about himself and he gets in the way a lot. However, when we learn about what happened to a video store, that you don't need to have heard of to enjoy, the film takes shape. The movie tells the story of 55,000 films that Mr. Kim wanted to find a new and good home for. That journey is remarkable. Redmon is a focal point and may have some mental health issues based on what he says, but he has a passion and it's endearing. The doc is disjointed, but the story, which includes the Italian mafia is totally worth it. Watched this on Kanopy, which was the only place I could find it for free. Final Score: 7.8/10 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/24/24 Full Review LABEL Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
