william d This is really a filmed stage play rather than a movie. Nothing is shot on location; even the scenes on the heath clearly take place on a stage. The acting is excellent however, particularly Frances Barber as Goneril and William Gaunt as the Earl of Gloucester. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member when actors convey the sentiment of the lines so skillfully with tone and body language, understanding the archaic language is far less important. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The televised film of Shakespeare's "King Lear" performed in 2008 is driven by excellent performances, particularly McKellen at his best, while being too faithful and depressing as in increasing the tragic spirit. Furthermore, there are times it can be a little disturbing - adjacent to the depressing tone, and questioning some misplacements of items and clothing. (B) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Classic. McKellen is a brilliant actor, perfect for the role of Lear. Unfortunately, he also mumbles through the entire play; I caught about two words in three. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member For a PBS production, you can't ask for much better than this. Good performances all around, though Ian McKellen certainly steals the show and is phenomenal. The set design is definitely the hardest part of the production to look past. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Aside from Ian Mckellen's performance, the whole thing feels like a really, really cheap TV movie.
