Saibal Chatterjee NDTV Irretrievably undermined by a trite script, making Dulquer's shot at a massy pan-Indian film a letdown, a king-size one at that. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 8, 2023 Full Review Ronak Kotecha The Times of India Short of becoming a cult gangster classic, it does have the mass appeal and the ability to hold its audience captive for a long time. It just doesn’t know when to stop. Rated: 3/5 Sep 8, 2023 Full Review Priyanka Sundar Firstpost Here is a film that could have gone big with its bromance and noir treatment, but all we experienced was shallow mass moments, and scenes strung together to make a passable story. Rated: 2/5 Aug 31, 2023 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix King of Kotha is nothing more than a semi-convoluted soap opera about feuding drug dealers. There's nothing really original in this soulless tale that shows the expected betrayals, revenge plots, and violence. The musical numbers look very misplaced. Sreyas T Best Action movie ever in my life from soundtracks till story till graphics all perfect loved it !! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review V S Ajith K Pls upgrade in part two Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/12/23 Full Review Anand N Super movie,This Movie watching impressions, DQ super acting. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/05/23 Full Review Sachin E Valare predictable aayirunnu, puthuma onnum thonneela. Poor scriptwriting and effortless dialogue ruined this period drama. Dulquer's presence in the movie is charming nonetheless. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/02/23 Full Review Anoop T This cinematic experience left me utterly underwhelmed. The only saving graces were Dulquer's performance and the exceptional music by Jakes Bejoy and Shaan Rahman. It's disheartening to see such talent go to waste. I can't help but wonder if the director hails from another dimension because no local filmmaker could possibly deliver such a disappointing result with such a promising cast and crew. The decision to stretch the movie to a lengthy 3 hours remains a baffling mystery. I found myself transported back to the clichéd scenes of 90's movies, devoid of any soul or originality. It was a dull journey through and through. What truly irked me was the repeated use of the same tired tactics: enticing trailers and an avalanche of pre-release hype. Regrettably, it worked like a charm once again. In summary, this film was a missed opportunity, with only Dulquer and the music shining through the mediocrity. It's a reminder that even the most talented individuals can't salvage a misguided project. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/18/23 Full Review arvind s King of Kotha is the perfect example of a mass film gone wrong. Dulquer Salmaan tries to reinvent himself with a full blown mass-y, violent film that has him emulate the infamous John Wick albeit with the wrong weapon. Set between 1986 & 1996, Kotha is a place that is run by Kannan Bhai. He has driven the youth to drugs and ruined the town. But his past catches up with him when Raju returns to take back Kotha. If there is one thing Malayalam cinema has done, it is how they reinvented the so-called mass films. Last year's Thallumaala was exceptional with style & substance going hand-in-hand. A perfect example of how to do a generic mass movie right was the recently released Jailer. It got everything right and it didn't even drag despite both films having similar runtimes. Dulquer as Raju gives it his best but the role just doesn't suit him. He was style, has all the swag in the world but just not for this role. Shabeer Kallarakkal, who plays Kannan Bhai is a good fit as gangster. The female leads don't have anything substantial to do in the film. Shammi Thilakan is good but has limited scope. Gokul Suresh does a good enough job. But the star of the entire film and frankly the only bits of the film that I honestly enjoyed were the one with Chemban Vinod. The English speaking gangster vibe worked well. King of Kotha feels longer than 3 hours. It drags and drags towards the end credits without a valid reason. The twists feel desperate and all the style & swagger just feels tiresome. Except for that excellent theme music (which they hardly use in the film) and Chemban Vinod's performance, King of Kotha is a major disappointment.
