Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly Rated: B- Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Complementing Walken's bravura turn are equally flamboyant performances by David Caruso as the young Irish cop out to destroy Walken, and Larry Fishburne as Walken's slightly crazy aide-de-camp. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out A film which, despite splendid location work, lurches sloppily and messily from kill to kill, orgy to orgy, coke to crack, clich to clich. Angus S Silly gangster cliches and gratuitous gunshots abound, in a dark, city noir setting trying to copy the gritty New York feel of Taxi Driver on the gangster side of town. Two stars may be a wee bit generous. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/17/25 Full Review Andrew S A movie from a better time. This might not be a "work of art" but compared to movies today it's 10/10. If this was maybe 10-15 years ago I'd give it a 7.5-8.5. But because the bar has been lowered so much it now scores higher. It's 2025 right now and I'm 36 and I had never even heard of this movie. I'm really glad I stumbled across it. It's entertaining. It doesn't have any of the stupid elements of modern movies. Things that the Critical Drinker refers to as "THE MESSAGE" and "MODERN AUDIENCES." Just a good "old fashioned" action gangster movie. I swear some of the critical reviews on here seem to read as if they'd give Scarface a 6/10. Which maybe it was but also what would they consider a 10/10? This movie has a lot of big name actors in it and I think they all did a good job. Lawrence Fishburne, Wesley Snipes, Giancarlo Esposito, David Caruso, and of course Christopher Walken. These guys are legends. What ever happened to just being COOL? This is a cool movie. I read one review that said it's what two high school sophomores would make if they found some "pot brownies" and a pen and notepad. That person must be like 60+ years old and probably hasn't seen many modern movies. They've gotten a lot worse. This movie doesn't require you to just "not think about it" and consume. This movie is simple and entertaining and thank God doesn't have any of that modern cringe. I'm going to look up other movies by the director (Abel Ferrara). Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Harvey K Tarantino says it's amazing but frankly I wouldn't have a clue. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/25 Full Review Shawn R Great solid movie with exceptional acting! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/03/24 Full Review Brad M Pretty good gangster film. Worth watching. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/02/24 Full Review Sams K Brutally underrated movie, a wonderful one. Christopher Walken is a legend. You must watch this and watch the other Abel Ferrara's movies.
