Nick M Ernst Lubitsch directs this film adaptation of a play by Hanns Kräly, which is a simplified take on the classic tale of The Taming of the Shrew set in the German countryside. It's a fun picture, but it isn't one of Lubitsch's strongest. His sense of humor and zest for creating likeable and relatable characters are on full display, but the narrative isn't nearly as robust as the original tale (and much less so than some of its other adaptations). The "shrew" character, Liesel, starts off as willful and brutish, but showing none of the intelligence of her literary progenitor. The comedy seems pitched for a more provincial audience than I'm used to seeing from Lubitsch. This isn't a bad thing, but the story likewise seems less sophisticated than it otherwise might be. I was turned off by how quickly Liesel loses her spirit once her new husband starts throwing his weight around. I was then dumbfounded when she expresses dismay that her husband doesn't seem to love her, when never before has she shown any interest in him. And in the end, all it takes to win his heart is a tea setting and a simple wardrobe change. It isn't a bad film, but all but the most ardent Lubitsch fans should probably skip over this one.
