Adapted from Naomi Fontaine's acclaimed novel, Kuessipan is Myriam Verreault's first narrative feature. In a Quebec Innu community, Mikuan and Shaniss struggle to maintain their close friendship when they clash over their diverging ambitions. Director Myriam Verreault does everything so well here it's hard to believe her tale of friendship and family on a Quebec Innu reservation is her first feature.

Rough on the edges, confusing on some of it subparts but dramatically intense, well acted and full of astonishing visuals. The first act is sumptuous with striking visuals, in deep yet with a few words relationships characterization and strong build up to the turning point. The the movies loses a little of its striking force, not helped with that french from quebec that might have needed more subtitles, but ends beautifully in full emotional bloom.
