christopher c. m It's an odd movie, not as batshit crazy as "The 7th Curse" but very close. Our main hero is a bit of jerk and there's no story arc where he starts out as a jerk and gets better through the movie. He's just a jerk. But it's very good. It's funny, it's not slow and it's over all a unique story. A rarity these days. Rated 1/5 Stars •  Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member When the ghost of a small-town thug bullies a third-rate priest/magician (Lau) into binding him to a recently dead corpse so he can take revenge on the young martial artist who accidentally caused his demise (Chong), everything that can go does, does go wrong. Soon, everyone is running from hopping vampires, angry ghosts, and an unkillable, blood-drinking martial artist out to kill them all. "Kung Fu Zombie" is a movie that defies description. Its brand of craziness has to be seen to believed, sort of the way any attempt to summarize "Evil Dead 2" will fall short. Words simply cannot fully describe the weird slapstick as the necromancer (who dresses like Fu Manchu but often sounds like one of the Thtree Stooges) performs failed rite after failed rite, and then later tries to hide from a partially reincarnated ghost looking for revenge. The strangeness of the fact that film's main villain--a Kung Fu killer for hire who has mastered a technique where he becoomes stronger and more monstrous with each person he kills--has a musical theme that is the first few notes of the Monte Norman's "James Bond Theme". It's the bizarre humor and slapstick that makes this film fun. The martial arts fight scenes are fair, but I've seen better. The horror scenes are fairly mild and almost all softened by comedic antics, both from the undead and the living characters. (There is one rather shocking scene, because it is totally unexpected... where the main villain reveals his vampiric tendancies.) If you seek out a copy of this film, don't the double-feature DVD "Fistful of Talons/Kung Fu Zombie". That's the version I saw, and it's got some of the worst subtitles and full-screen cropping I've ever seen on a commercial release. More often than not, the subtitles ran off the left and right edges of the screen... not that it mattered, because the translations were mostly nonsense. (What WAS up with calling the dead bodies "salted fish"?) If you enjoy crazy, frenitic horror films like "Evil Dead 2", or even some of Stephen Chow's films like "Kung Fu Hustle", I think "Kung Fu Zombies" might be something you'll get a kick out of. (Just be aware that everyone will be Kung Fu fighting.)
