Audience Member A nice woman I work with translated La Comadrita as an affectionate term for "little godmother" and one who is also a dear friend. Not speaking or understanding much Spanish myself, I only got parts of this and may be incorrect in some of the plot, but I will break my personal rule and try to expand on the synopsis that Rotten Tomatoes provides. La India Maria Nicolasa visits her friends' (compadre, comadre?) home where they make fireworks displays. Later a mean man comes in demanding something (money?) and Maria chases him out of their home. His goons/henchmen come at night and burn the house down, setting off the fireworks, while everyone was out at the wedding of their daughter. As their house is burned down, Maria brings them to the fancy house she cares for, since its owners are away on vacation or something. While they are all staying there they apparently have to pretend to be its rich occupants, bringing some funny moments, in particular Maria making mixed drinks for the company. Meanwhile, Maria gets to fill in for a missing guy (presumed dead?) and play in a soccer/football game and race a motorcycle. The use of a body double for her stunts is always funny. There is a seance for the man thought dead and it turns out to be another amusing scene. The owners of the house eventually come home and the bad guys are caught. The film ends with the new bride giving birth to a baby and Maria apparently becomes La Comadrita and they celebrate with fireworks. This is a fun entry in the La India Maria movies, but not one of the best. I love La India Maria though, and would enjoy any movie based on her character. Maria Elena Velasco is a comic genius and tried to give a voice and dignity to the poor classes. Viva La India Maria! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
