Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/11/25 Full Review Hadassa W Interesting story that I knew nothing about. Charming depiction of rural life and the traditional music scene in the DR, in a particular era. I loved the actress who played Fefifa La Grande for most of the film. But like most biopics, this one suffers from trying to cover too much. About two-thirds of the way through, the storyline made a big jump from the 1970s to the year 2000, and the film seemed to lose its focus. The actress playing La Grande also changed. The second actress looked totally different and had a totally different vibe, coming across as brash and hard, whereas the previous actress brought a more nuanced, "spunky warmth" to the character. One of the main events of La Grande's later life was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. While this may seem like an essential part of the story -- it really overloaded the movie, which had already done a fairly deep dive into La Grande's earlier life. I think the film would have been more effective if the main part culminated with a standout event of her earlier life/career, with perhaps a more condensed "coda" bringing us up to the present. A final note for viewers dependent upon the English subtitles: the subtitles appear to have been generated by AI rather than a skilled human translator. They FREQUENTLY did not make sense and were clearly wrong. Most of the time, it was possible to grasp the gist of the scene, if not the meaning of a particular sentence. However, the flawed subtitles were a significant distraction, frustration, and disappointment. This was especially true in the context of song lyrics. Since the film is a musical biopic, being able to understand the lyrics is critical to understanding the film's subject. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/16/25 Full Review Read all reviews
