bill p AKA "Doctor Tarr's Torture Dungeon." This is a terrible movie BUT a perfect example of early 1970s high camp. A period piece that looks to be trying to evoke the 18th century with silly acting, much yelling, hilarious costumes, and goofy soundtrack. Lots of boobs, the sign of outré cinema of the time. Well worth a viewing for historical reasons. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member An uneven film with more than a few outrageously memorable moments. The film is an adaptation of Poe's story "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether", and the plot will be familiar to folks who have seen any number of other "inmates running the asylum" films like "Don't Look in the Basement". A journalist travels to a remote asylum to interview the director Dr. Maillard and learn about his unconventional methods, only to learn that there has been a coup of sorts and the inmates are literally running this asylum. This is an extremely talky film, and it's not even that it's dialogue heavy, it's monologue heavy. Claudio Brook, who stars as the fake Dr. Maillard, talks and talks and talks, and there are long stretches that are less than interesting. Yet in it's best moments, this film has imagery reminiscent of Jodorowsky in it's sheer bizarreness (the dancing chicken man is a highlight). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Extremely strange, sometimes surrealistic film; has a cult following. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member The inmates have taken over the asylum. It starts slow but picks up though even if you are paying attention it does become a bit incoherent at times. You really have to love bad movies to make it through this. That or like boobies, lots of boobies. Oh and there is an interpretive bird dance towards the end. There is not enough interpretive dance in horror movies. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member It's crazy, perhaps a little too crazy as the plot is barely understandable and the characters are too annoying. There are decent moments and entertaining bits, but the slow pacing and stupidity make it a hard watch. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member If you like FANDO Y LIS, EL TOPO or Juan Moctezuma, you'll enjoy this film. A rambling, surreal KING OF HEARTS.
