Italian Maddalena Ciarrapico (Sophia Loren) immigrates to New York, carrying with her a mortadella sausage, a gift for her husband-to-be, Michel Bruni (Luigi Proietti). Airport officials inform Maddalena that she cannot enter with pork products. She refuses to abandon the delicacy, however, and her defiance wins her support from local media sources. Now all Maddalena must decide is if Michele, who while abroad has gone from ardent communist to quiet capitalist, is worth the trouble.

Audience Member Inno all'emancipazione femminile, al coraggio e all'indipendenza. Sophia Loren diventa icona di questi ambiti quando, arrivata in un Paese a lei sconosciuto, si immola per ciò che ritiene giusto; sfidando tutto e tutti, senza mai accontentarsi e senza mai essere accompagnata da un uomo in grado di rubarle la scena. Anzi proprio il circolo di uomini che le girano intorno, rendono l'idea di come sia lei e solo lei, il centro del film; che nasce e muore con questa filosofia. Alcuni aspetti vengono tralasciati per non distogliere l'attenzione dalla protagonista e viene quasi del tutto saltata l'esplorazione del "Nuovo mondo".
