Michael C Great film such a masterpiece!!!! One of my favorites!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/04/24 Full Review Audience Member Are you interested in seeing something truly underground? Something daring, different and norm-defying? Well, be careful what you wish for because you might end up seeing "L.A. Zombie". Bruce LaBruce's peculiar creation follows an alien, played by popular French gay porn star Francois Sagat, who has the ability to heal people with his semen. He wanders the streets of L.A. and encounters the sick, the desperate, the homeless. And he penetrates them to heal them. With phenomenally low production values and truly gruesome motifs, "L.A. Zombie" turns into a convincing display of LaBruce's ability of making the hideously seem beautiful. The visual tone and the overall atmosphere here is definitely more than one might expect from the premise. The sex scenes could be described as antipornographic in their extreme ugliness, but even that ugliness is somehow- unerotically- compelling. I'm glad I've never liked Sagat as a porn star, because seeing this might ruin the French giant for me. It's not surprising he took on the role, though, he is one of the most interesting and philosophically grounded commentators on society from the pornographic perspective, at least among those few who get any mainstream attention. In the end "L.A. Zombie" is a mixture of contrasts, tedious but compelling, ugly but beautiful. LaBruce has always been about illuminating the lives of the most undesirable, forgotten and hidden people in America. In this film he does this in a simple, nonvocal but truly memorable way. I saw this in at a film festival and a big number of people walked out in the middle of the flick. I can't really blame them, but still I fear they missed something special. Zombie is definitely boring. Tries too hard to make it gruesome forgetting the word...ENTERTAINING. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
