Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express There are flashes when you feel the film will finally say something important, but then it lapses back into stodgy set-pieces which go on and on. Rated: 1.5/5 Oct 22, 2019 Full Review Namrata Joshi The Hindu All the interesting disparate elements in the film don't come together well enough to build it into a compelling whole... Oct 22, 2019 Full Review Saibal Chatterjee NDTV The effort to link received philosophy with physical brutality is laboured and largely ineffective. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 15, 2020 Full Review Devesh Sharma Filmfare Superb production values, a nice background score, and [it] doesn't disappoint in the acting department as well. Of only the narrative flowed at a faster pace, we would have had a cracker of a film indeed. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 22, 2019 Full Review Kumar Shyam The National (UAE) With a feast of three big movies lined up for release on Diwali, the money saved on going to see Laal Kaptaan may well be better spent watching them instead. Rated: 2/5 Oct 22, 2019 Full Review Nandini Ramnath Scroll.in Gosain's reasons for chasing Rehmat are ultimately too prosaic to justify the 155-minute duration. The film is nasty and brutish but it isn't short enough. Oct 22, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Normally I don't like watching Bollywood films because of how bad their cinematography is. The only reason I watched this one is because firstly, I like watching historical films and shows and playing historical games, and secondly because the title was written in Devanagri. You might think this is such a trivial point, like why is this supposed to be important? But the thing is, it is one of the life hacks that can help you know whether a film is actually good or not. If a Hindi film didn't even bother writing in Hindi, anywhere in the film, it means they didn't even take their time to nurture the film. Initially I was a bit sceptical from watching this film. I was trashing it on every point - the badly done acting, the dud dialogues and the poorly paced story. But slowly I began liking this film as it went on. The story was actually pretty good. The acting seemed correct for the time setting. The cinematography is so good, every shot made it seem like a painting. It would have been realy cool if they added a lot more world building in this, since they only show Gosai moving from one point to another. The side characters were all amazing. The Maratha leader guiding his incompetant army was a hilarious side plot. The widow who wanted to get back her son from Rahmat Khan was meant to be emotional but fell dud, although it did contribute a lot to the storyline and we got to see Gosai a lot so I won't complain. The naga sadhus, the British were all memorable. The only problem I had with this was that the plot exposition finally happened in the last twenty four minutes. But other than that everything was great. I think Laal Kaptaan is one of the most visionary films in Bollywood. Sure it may not be as good as any classical Bollywood film, but at least it stays true to itself. You can actually see the dedication Navdeep Singh has put into it. I didn't have any problem with his film but I don't think I'm gonna see it again, since this entire film is based on suspense and plot twists. Definitely a one time watch if you ask me. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved it, dont listen to paid critics Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Saif Ali Khan, Deepak gives their mind-blowing performance in this movie, set in the 18th century, does a great at world-building and realistic view of that era, though story was bit slow, but it was really good movie it does better job of showing that era than Thugs of Hindustan people who said negative about it simply do not understand this type of movie. I think India is not ready for such kind of good movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member I don't know why this movie is so underrated. Being a bollywood made movie I consider it a huge leap because mostly the movies in bollywood are shitty comedy or unrealistic love stories. And the truth is the bollywood audience also likes such movies and maybe that is the reason this movie, although having awesome storyline and fabulous acting, is so much underrated. I would consider it an awesome one time watch thriller movie. Huge respect for such directors and actors who are hustling to bring something different and out of the box in such an industry which is so much saturated with filthy love stories.
