Patsy Patterson (May Robson) is an elderly, brash drunk whose unpredictable behavior lands her in a retirement home. Alabam Lee (Carole Lombard) is a fan dancer whose lewd act gets her charged with indecency. In an effort to clean up her image, Alabam's publicist (Raymond Walburn) decides she should "adopt" a mother for Mothers Day, and Alabam picks Patsy. What starts off as a publicity stunt, however, soon develops into a very real and meaningful relationship between the two women.

Helen Brown Norden Vanity Fair Carole Lombard as a fan dancer and May Robson as an old slattern whose hobby is liquor but whose heart is gold. Pretty silly stuff. Steve D Only fun comes from Lombard and she plays 2nd fiddle to an extreme overactor Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This delightful comedy stars Carole Lombard and May Robson, with support from one of my favourite character actors, Walter Connolly. 'Lady by Choice' doesn't have the scope of Lombard's best films, and could have done with a better leading man - but still, a lot of fun. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member a sequel of sorts to capra's 'lady for a day" Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Okay but no Lady for a Day. May Robson is always a pleasure to watch and Carole Lombard is full of snap but the story is as old as the hills and not terribly well directed. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Obviously, I love Carole Lombard, but I sometimes find her roles or the way she acts them a little over the top, ie Twentieth Century and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. This role was more subdued and definitely heart-felt. I loved the relationship between Lombard and Robson and their characters. The story is reminiscent of Camille - wrong side of the tracks girl in love with an heir who could lose everything by marrying her - but not quite as well. It is still worth viewing.
