      Critics Consensus

Hanks' performance in the lead role is inspired, but this is a relatively minor offering from the Coen brothers.

Aender S Good, but the film with Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers is better. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/13/24 Full Review Kevin C I recently had the pleasure of watching "The Ladykillers," and I must say, it was an absolute delight from start to finish. The film's blend of dark humor, suspense, and quirky characters kept me thoroughly entertained throughout. One of the undeniable highlights of the movie was the exceptional performances delivered by Tom Hanks and Irma P. Hall. Tom Hanks, known for his versatility as an actor, once again proves why he is considered one of the best in the business. His portrayal of the eccentric Professor G.H. Dorr was both captivating and hilarious, adding depth and charm to the character. Equally impressive was Irma P. Hall's portrayal of the curious and resourceful Marva Munson. Her chemistry with Hanks on screen was palpable, making their interactions all the more enjoyable to watch. Hall brought a perfect balance of wit and warmth to her role, making Marva a character you couldn't help but root for. Beyond the stellar performances, "The Ladykillers" boasts a clever and engaging storyline, expertly crafted direction, and a fantastic supporting cast that all contribute to its overall charm. If you're looking for a film that will keep you entertained from beginning to end, with standout performances from Tom Hanks and Rebecca Hall, then "The Ladykillers" is definitely worth a watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/03/24 Full Review Some Guy F Many Coen brothers movies are overrated. A few Coen brothers movies are properly rated. This may be their only movie that's underrated. Great comedic performances, if Tom Hanks is the weakest link in your movie, you probably have a good movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/24 Full Review L L Didn't even finish it, its so bad. The original was only ok and even that was better. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review Troy P I kept watching hoping something better was coming, but despite liking many of the actors I never liked the movie. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/31/23 Full Review Farah R Tom Hanks goes above and beyond to play his character well. Unfortunately, the lazy writing makes The Ladykillers an unfunny comedy and an uninteresting heist movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Will Self London Evening Standard It is not the blockbuster the (Coen) brothers hanker after, and it is not going to be a critical success, but, for me, it is the best comedy they have managed. Jan 9, 2018 Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media Some wicked pleasures for mature teens and adults. Rated: 3/5 Dec 28, 2010 Full Review David Edelstein Slate The Ladykillers is small and compact -- it doesn't kill, it's just a doodle -- but it's a very pleasant cartoon for grown-ups. It's some sweet fodder. Aug 18, 2007 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Tom Hanks, who is pretty much one of the most dependable actors around these days, does what he can to make this character his own. Rated: 3.0/4.0 Sep 13, 2020 Full Review Tim Brayton Alternate Ending The nadir of the Coen brothers' directorial career. Rated: 2/5 Jun 2, 2020 Full Review Kaleem Aftab The List The Coens have such a distinctive style they hardly need to bother with such a specific homage, yet the unsure comic timing on show here would suggest that they couldn't their name in the snow in comparison with original director Alexander Mackendrick.
