Rated: B+ Dec 4, 2009 Full Review Tom Keogh Seattle Times Fortunately, Eimbcke's laconic if fanciful storytelling strengths ring more true than his somewhat artificial and hackneyed visual style, which includes a penchant for lengthy wide-angle shots that make the world look like a feverishly alien place. Audience Member Fernando Eimbcke is one of my favorite directors of the 2000's. A great visualist and minimalist like Ali Kaurasmaki. If you're patient you will be rewarded. Lots of pathos and humor. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Very subtle and slow paced movie. It takes place in "real" time, with anticipated time sequences. Although, time "doesn't" flow like a big budget Hollywood picture likes us to believe. This is a good example of realistic moments - Every moment, in the boy's day. The imperfect, and average scenarios tie this piece together great. Ultimately, the calm demeanor changes into turmoil that shifts the movie unexpectedly. Yet, the story holds a strong realization that beyond a surface level things aren't always what they appear to be. I gave this a 4 star review because of my own selfish reasons. I wanted "more" substances from each character. Although, I know each role had their major vulnerabilities exposed. So, maybe I am wishing for just one more day in their lives.
