Beautifully animated and genuinely endearing, The Land Before Time is sure to please dino-obsessed tykes, even if it's a little too cutesy for older viewers.

Anne Stephenson Arizona Republic Just when you think animated movies for children have become a triumph of marketing over imagination, along comes Don Bluth to make you think again. Rated: 3/4 Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Amy Greene Atlanta Journal-Constitution The story does have a certain degree of charm, but the biggest flaw is that it covers several Major Life Themes without much subtlety or use of symbolism. Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Jay Carr Boston Globe The spirit of Land Before Time is right. And, thanks to Bluth and his staff, the film's style is right, too. Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Carla Monfort Espinof The Land Before Time is a charming adventure that, despite having a very dark moment, continues to excite and function as great family entertainment, thanks to its endearing characters and its universal message. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3.5/5 May 13, 2024 Full Review Mat Brunet AniMat's Review (YouTube) Before all the sequels and the dozens of episodes of the TV show, it was just a simple story of five young dinosaurs on a journey to a promised land, and that’s all you need for a heartfelt picture. Rated: 9/10 Apr 7, 2023 Full Review Eleanor O'Sullivan Asbury Park Press (NJ) Bluth and his enormous team of artists have done an exceptional job, drawing you into a world forbidding and, in the expected happy ending, enchanting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/03/23 Full Review Mark S Took my 9 year old grandson to it. He enjoyed it, which is all I can ask for. Besides, I thought it was cute as well. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/05/23 Full Review Jay W "The Land Before Time" is a 1988 film produced by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas and directed/animated by Don Bluth. It has a runtime of 69 minutes and it is one of my all-time favorite films. In all honesty, I can not be professional and objective with my review, I have been emotionally compromised. I love this movie. It is the first movie I can remember watching, and to this day holds the record for movie I have seen more than any other. As a kid I would watch it nonstop. Senior year for my AP literature class I analyzed the film in depth and got a 112% on the assignment. When I show the movie to people, I almost feel like I am showing them a home video of mine or a family photo album. I blush and hope that they like the film as much as I do. This movie feels personal. People may point out moments where animation gets recycled. They might nitpick dinosaur inaccuracies. They may even say the lighting with the weather is all too convenient to fit the mood. To all those critiques I say, "I don't care, this movie's awesome." This was Don Bluth beating Disney at their own game. The film came out the same day as Disney's "Oliver and Company", and both critically and financially "Land Before Time" was the winner. This movie would go on to spawn 13 sequels and a TV series. This phenomenon was due to the quality of this first entry. The characters of Littlefoot, Cera, Petrie, Ducky and Spike are timeless and endearing. Their quest is simple and immediately understandable. They are 5 different types of dinosaurs that band together to accomplish a common goal. They're small and vulnerable in this dangerous world, and Bluth makes sure the audience is aware of that danger. The task they must accomplish feels insurmountable. The music by James Horner, also needs to be highlighted. Despite this being the only entry of the franchise to not be a musical, this one clearly has the best music. The soundtrack alone is enough to resonate an emotional connection, that combined with the visuals, I am just emotional putty in this movie's hands. I laugh at the moments they choose and of course, cry at the moments they want me to. This has been one of my favorite for decades and doesn't show any signs of stopping. "The Land Before Time" is a movie that just gets better with time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Read all reviews
