What to Know

Critics Consensus

Last Action Hero has most of the right ingredients for a big-budget action spoof, but its scattershot tone and uneven structure only add up to a confused, chaotic mess.

Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader It’s nothing new that the makers of Last Action Hero don’t have a clear notion of what separates movies from life, but the makers of the other summer blockbusters aren’t any better versed in reality... Nov 8, 2018 Full Review Adam Mars-Jones Independent (UK) The director has to boost the realism of his staging in a rather self-defeating manner. It begins to look, not that he's having it both ways, trading on what he mocks, but that he has painted himself into a corner. Funny, self aware, poking fun at the Industry while being tremendously entertaining. With great villains and a killer soundtrack. Matthew T Easily the most underrated Arnold movie, and one of the most underrated action comedies of all time, ignore the RT rating. The tale of a movie-obsessed teenager who finds himself inside the movie of his favouite action star, Last Action Hero is superbly written, with moments that still, after many repeat viewings, have me laughing hysterically (the rottweiler pyramid... you'll know it when you see it). A postmodern take on Arnold's and director McTieran's own action canon, that willfully deconstructs the genre to hilarious effect, the movie can sometimes be a little heavy handed in its approach, but one could argue that is entirely fitting for an Arnold vehicle and spoof. And that's what is so impressive: this movie works both as an over-the-top cop action movie / fish out of the water buddy movie, AND as a postmodern spoof. There are tonnes of easter eggs here for fans, Shakespeare references for literati (including a wonderful sequence where Arnold reimagines Hamlet as am action hero), and a serious critique of the unrealities of cinema vs the real world. Charles Dance is superb as the soliloquying glass-eyed villain of the piece, and Arnold gives his best most nuanced performance of any movie (yes, including T2), at times the tough action hero, at others highly vulnerable, and even self-deriding of his own Hollywood persona. Why this movie is so poorly rated is a mystery (although it's not the only movie by McTieran to be so) - perhaps it was a bit too clever for its intended audience? Perhaps fans were not ready to see the star trashing his on-screen persona. But time has aged this gem incredibly well. Oh and look out for a cheeky cameo by the then less famous Ian McKellen as Death - classic! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Ari V Not half bad actually. The slit/demon eyed bad guy realizing that the difference between movies and rl is that his kind can get away with it, is a particularly clever touch. 2.75/5 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Scott W One of the characters is called "Leo the Fart." That's all you have to really know about it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/11/25 Full Review Anderson d The film, from beginning to end, is a metalanguage: a film that talks about the film itself; a cinematographic genre that talks about the genre itself... Two possibilities: either the imbec...I mean, specialized critics of the time, don't know (even today) what metalanguage is; or they simply used "ill will" (haterism) to evaluate the film. 😒 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Cudalbu R A brilliant masterpiece of comedy and action that shined thanks to Arnold and Austin brilliant acting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/26/24 Full Review Jacob M An Excellent meta action film. Its critique on 80s and 90s action film writing is a kin to Unforgivens critique of the Western genre.
