After helping repel British forces in the War of 1812, Jean Lafitte (Paul Henreid) leaves America, and his sweetheart, Belle Summers (Karin Booth), to work as a pirate for the Venezuelan government. After establishing a stronghold on an island in the Gulf of Mexico, he expressly forbids his crew from raiding American ships. Lafitte's world starts to fall apart when a rival pirate (Harry Cording) captures a U.S. cargo vessel and attracts the unwanted attention of the government.
