Adam Solomons IndieWire If only Late Shift had more of a story and was eager to spend longer with its characters, it might make use of its solid lead performance and claustrophobic setting. But its attempt to preach runs cold and only shines a light on what might’ve been. Rated: C+ Feb 20, 2025 Full Review Guy Lodge Variety In its cool, propulsive procedural tracking of ward activity, Late Shift quite sufficiently makes its point regarding the monumental challenge and value of Floria’s work, and that of thousands like her. Feb 20, 2025 Full Review Fionnuala Halligan Screen International Occasionally schematic, albeit only in the service of pricking our consciences, Petra Volpe’s tense drama is a shot in the arm of undiluted empathy for the over-stretched, under-valued nursing profession. Feb 20, 2025 Full Review Jack Walters Next Best Picture It’s not only a star-making vehicle for Leonie Benesch but also an extremely timely film that raises awareness of an ongoing crisis many people aren’t familiar enough with Rated: 8/10 Mar 15, 2025 Full Review Connor Lightbody Pop Heist [Late Shift] works as a call-to-arms for systemic change within the Swiss hospital system and of the worldwide nursing crisis, and does so through an emotionally charged lead performance from an effervescent Leonie Benesch. Sa K As a nurse, I can only say: Wow! It's incredible how authentically the movie portrays my work. I actually felt like I was working the whole time I was watching it. Although the movie is only two hours long, the director has managed to make you feel like you've followed an entire shift from start to finish. Great camera, great editing! It shows very well what makes working on an understaffed ward so stressful: the constant calls, the constant interruptions. You always have to prioritize, what has to be done first? You can't forget anything, but that's impossible. And often there is no sensible prioritization - all tasks are equally important and urgent. Leonie Benesch as Floria was outstanding! I'm a nurse myself and watched her movements closely. It just looks like she's been working in nursing for ten years. And how she reacts to stress, this withdrawing into herself, the ignoring of stupid comments, the politeness that you have to wring out of yourself despite all the stress. The subtle traumatization that creeps in through such shifts of horror. At the same time, the director manages to show what could actually be so beautiful about the profession. Really really excellent! The only thing I ask myself: how does this movie help nursing? Everyone is now aware that there are extreme shortcomings. Even in politics. The fact that things are still going so badly shows that there is no will to change and that a fundamental reform of the healthcare system is needed. And more trainees. But this film will certainly not bring us more trainees.
