jesse o Your enjoyment of this film will depend on whether or not you enjoy watching people cook. Really. The story is really quite bad. At least as far as the characters and their individual stories, which relies on the same melodrama and sentimentality that is present on a lot of Korean films. The story did absolutely nothing for me, it's poorly written and it's manipulative. It's cool if you want to tell the story of these two learning to forgive their mothers for their "mistakes" but it's done in such a melodramatic manner that it really isn't effective storytelling to me, at least. Not to mention the female character being absolutely unlikable. She's annoying to the point where you don't want to watch the movie anymore. Especially since, as an adult, her anger is completely unjustified because it was something that her mother could not control. If you're an adult, these things should be easy to figure out, so her character was poorly developed. And the other guy wasn't any better either, it just so happened that he was the more likable of the two. But his story about his real mother wasn't any better. Unfortunately, the film didn't really have potential to be great to begin with. A movie about cooking is only going to be as good as its characters are, since you obviously can't do 2 hours straight of food porn without any motive, and this film's characters are terrible. The comedy isn't any better either, it really just consisted of the same guy laughing repeatedly and hoping that you, the audience, found his laughter so hilarious that they wouldn't really have to try to put some decent comedy in there. The film shines during the cooking scenes, because it actually handles these scenes with respect and care, so that's where the film's rating is directed at. These scenes are handled with such love and care that you have to wonder why that same love and care wasn't present during the rest of the film. This film is really quite a disaster, outside of the cooking scenes, the characters are bad, the story is even worse, and there's no humor to speak of. This movie doesn't even really try, again with the exception being the cooking scenes, it's just content getting by doing as little as possible.
