Decades after the death of his wife, New Zealand-born writer Katherine Mansfield (Jane Birkin), British editor John Middleton-Murry visits France to oversee a new publication of her work. While abroad, John meets the beautiful Marie (also Birkin), who looks strikingly similar to his late spouse. As Marie forms a bond with John, she begins to uncover details about his relationship with Katherine, and discovers that he hasn't honored his wife's wishes about her literary legacy.
