John DeFore The Hollywood Reporter A slow-to-start but delightful tale of ancient magic and clueless men. Feb 4, 2018 Full Review Manohla Dargis New York Times You can get lost in these pictorial reveries as you trace the rays of light piercing the trees, brightening the dark waters and the reality-softening haze. Feb 1, 2018 Full Review Greg Cwik Slant Magazine Every pan and snap zoom and dissolve is exact, every whorl of smoke and wind-thrown swath of leaves pulled from a dream and placed methodically before our eyes. Anderson Combustible Celluloid Legend of the Mountain is a beautiful movie to be sure, but it's also a movie that understands beauty. Audience Member Can't you hear the drums?! This is funnier and crazier – by a lot – than the other King Hu films I've seen. There's also barely any fighting, which is OK by me, but when it happens, it's a spectacle to behold. The women are in charge here, and the men are just dopes. The mother is hilarious. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review raphael g Masterful. So beautiful. At the end, it felt a LITTLE bit overlong, but it was still wonderful. King Hu <3 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member An adaptation of a traditional Chinese ghost story by King Hu. It is kind of slow in the first half, but once the truth about village people is revealed, it gets quicker. Although there is no sword fight nor kungfu fight, Hu's veteran job on mise-en-scene gives great depth to the film. Cinematography, which makes the most of natural sourses, is great as usual. As long as who are really ghosts is kept secret to you, it is suspenceful and tense, but once it is revealed, and they start to fight with supernatural powers, it gets a little dissapointing. Also, the hero is so stupid and weak that could even annoy you. King Hu's goddess Hsu Feng does a great performance in a bitch role, and young Sylvia Chang shows her cuteness fully.
