Audience Member Very few stage plays make natural transitions to the screen. This is a strong film of the great Lanford Wilson's early autobiographic play. I saw it onstage with a young Christopher Walken and later with a young Jeff Daniels. Kevin Bacon walks a tightrope between candor and cover, playing with Kyra Sedgwick (they met on this project and married), Lindsay Crouse and a very young Casey Affleck in his first film. Rather than hide its stage origins, director Elgeson creates a frame which constantly shifts between the objective and subjective and slides back and forth in time. Also features a remarkable Pat Metheny score. Set in the waning days of the Fifties, it's largely about why the Sixties were necessary. First, it has a great story about a guy who goes to live with a father, and his family, who abandoned him a long time ago. I thought Bacon was excellent as well as the other cast. It just was all over the place. The actors stop and talk to the camera at various times, almost like a stage play. The movie also goes forward and backward in time, so one feels a little disconnect with the story and where it is. Bacon made you feel for him as he finally feels a part of a family, but then everything just seems to fall apart around him.
