walter m n "Les Apaches," Aziz(Aziz El Hadachi) works odd jobs around a resort community in Corsica. One of them involves looking after houses when the residents are not at home. A fringe benefit of which involves hosting parties there with his friends. During one of which, some items happen to go missing. As a result, Aziz's father makes him return the items in question. And then somebody has to go and bring up the guns. In trying to detail the class divisions in Corsica,"Les Apaches" tries to take as natural approach as possible, and then goes to prove how little difference there is between that and amateurish when it films all of its characters in shadow. That's not to say this movie is a complete loss, however, as the final shot speaks volumes, but there is a mess to slog through until then. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Youth in Corsica today, perfect setting for a grandiose script. Alas, this film looks more like the reconstitution of the facts based on a newspaper article than the result of a thoughtful process. To put it simply there is one good image in the whole film, when the group decides to bury the boy they've murdered, but since they've forgotten the shovels, they all have to dig with their hands in a circle thus appearing like some prehistoric tribe. This plus two or three ideas don't make a good film. Great realistic cinema must be shot like a western, because people's live is grandiose, but in this film at no point is life bigger than life. The characters are never built, they are acting on impulses. We understand that the environment in which they live is hyper violent, all their jokes revolve around that, but that's the background, it doesn't explain the behaviour of these individuals the filmmaker decided to follow. In the 1970s the whole Scorsese thingy was already a bit vain, but now done on the cheap it is just pointless. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member A chilling tale of how a bit of fun can get seriously out of hand against a backdrop of class/racial differences in Corsica. Robin Clifford Reeling Reviews Considering its novice cast, sophomore director and miniscule budget, "Les Apaches" is a solid thriller that presents a gritty look at a place where few would bother to examine - except here. Rated: B Jul 21, 2014 Full Review Laura Clifford Reeling Reviews De Peretti favors observation over plot-driven dialogue and packs a punch in a scant 82 minutes. Rated: B Jul 16, 2014 Full Review Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat Spirituality & Practice A sad drama set in Corsica about class warfare, youth, and greed. Rated: 3/5 Jun 23, 2014 Full Review Amber Wilkinson Eye for Film Peretti's violence resonates. Mostly kept offscreen, it echoes ominously in the animalistic tendencies of the teens ... or in something as surprising as the bump and swoosh of a carwash.
