Tom Milne Time Out The dialogue gets increasingly lachrymose, and the slow pace begins to take its toll. Wonderful performances, though, and graced with an undeniable visual splendour. Jan 26, 2006 Full Review Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader An eerie and often beautiful medieval fantasy parable. Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Presented like the dark, harsh fairy tale it is, Carne managed to create a sumptuously poetic, luxurious film about how love does not indeed conquer all, but can perhaps endure. Audience Member I love another film from director Marcel Carne, "Children of Paradise", so I had high expectations for this one which unfortunately the film didn't' live up to. It is a good movie, and shares the same female lead in Arletty, but isn't the masterpiece that "Children of paradise" is. That being said, this is still an interesting and well-shot film that is definitely worth a watch.Ultimately I did enjoy it and can recommend it to fans of foreign or classic cinema. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Wow! Une merveille du duo Carne-Prevert. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member A beautiful poetic film about simply love conquering all. A clever concept of the devil sending 2 envoy's to a castle in Medieval times to create division & suffering. Filled with some scenes & lush stunning photography this film truly is worth the watch. The concepts in this film are excellent & the French Actor who plays the devil is sensational. Ultimately love stays strong & with beautiful costumes & music this film is just a real gem. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This Vichy-era period piece (escaping reality to the 15th century) by Carne and Prevert takes place in a dream world where envoys of the Devil can create mischief by casting romantic spells on those already devoted to others. True to any dream, the pacing is languorous but when you settle into its rhythm you might be swept along by its gentle ministrations. Here we see couples professing their love for each other -- but when the Devil himself shows up, can they defy his willful (and witty) efforts to tear them down? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member 2nd part but it just gets better Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Marcel Carné's really fantastic. An attractive and meaningful tale told in a very sophisicated and charming manner. One point specially attracts me: ain't love operated by devil? Although how sweet it might seem to be.
