Lesley M. Smith PopMatters Let It Shine sometimes zings, thanks to excellent acting by Tyler James Williams in the Cyrano role (here, Cyrus DeBarge) and a starry soundtrack melding hip-hop, gospel, and rap. Audience Member I loved this movie growing up! There is also amazing music and the actors are so talented. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/12/23 Full Review kondwani suprix J It teaches me how to work on my skill and win the girl of my dreams Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/02/23 Full Review Audience Member The songs have some bangers in them. always so fun to listen to them. the songs have some fire roasts and clever rhymes. this is not at 5 stars because I feel bad for how stupid Cyrus is. Glad he gets some common sense at the end not to be an asshole :) Love it! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review christopher c. m This is clearly a hip hop version of the Cyrano de Bergerac story. Cyrus is clearly Cyrano and Roxi like literally short for Roxanne. Not sure why we needed two antagonists in this. Cyrus's Conservative Christian dad who hates rap and a bully pompous arrogant rival. Lastly, it's kind of slow. Not to the point of boring, but it does lag in several places. But honestly, I am not a fan of rap and avoided this for awhile. But after seeing it. I liked it a lot more than I thought and I would and would recommend it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Let it Shine breathes new life to the DCOM musical formula adding rap and the values of church giving the story incredible depth. The characters are uniquely realized and have such chemistry within the group. This movie feels grounded and fleshed out making it stand tall in the DCOM cannon. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member It is a great musical movie defiantly a must see if someone in the family loves all types of music!!!
